What a week of living!!!!
My FR year was 96-97. Clemson basketball was getting it done, and I knew even then it was special. I am horrible at algebra. My 101 (or whatever) algebra TA says, if anyone can get me 2 NC ST tix this weekend, I’ll help you out… my hand shot up bc I NEEDED the help.
Fri night, 18yo me is having some some beers with a couple friends in my Norris Hall FR overflow room. It’s midnight and I say, hey, imma take my tent and go to LJ so I can just wake up there and get these tix. Camping at LJ for tix, as far as I know, was not a thing (correct me if I’m wrong.)
We camp, get the tix, hand them to the TA, leave our tent out during the Sat afternoon NV ST game. We win, Wake Forat wins, and we’re set for a top 3 collision with the Tim Duncan led Deacs. So we decide to stay until Mon morning for the Wake tix release.
There were maybe 5 tents at the time. We all meet and hang out. It’s January, chilly. So we go over to Cem Hill and take one of the 55g metal barrel trash cans, scour the hillside for downed wood, and start a fire by our tents. Sat night we pick up a dozen more campers.
Sunday is when the magic happened, my FAV college memory. Word gets out something is happening at LJ. My buddies come with a Lowenbrau keg for my tent, and by Sunday evening, LJ lawn is covered with people, I’m guessing at least 1000, maybe more. It’s a wild scene. Fireworks going off, fat guys and beautiful women streaking with American and Clemson flags to the cheers of the crowd. ROTC types rappelling the side of LJ, multiple barrel fires going. Rick Barnes showed up with a hundred pizzas and thanked the crowd for the support. Clemson officials open LJ for people to sleep inside if they’re cold, so you can imagine the kind of college activities taking place in there 😆
Needless to say, not much sleep. Tix were released Min morning at 10a or something, right when I had a computer science exam, so of course I prioritized and dropped the class.
Got tix with my crew 2 rows behind that amazing Clemson bench. We lost that game by missing a 3 with the chance to win at the buzzer (maybe it was Buckner or Lil Mac, can’t remember.)
Fast forward 27 years. On a whim I find myself changing plans and staying in LA for the sweet 16 and elite 8. Best Clemson basketball memory since then.
I fly to Chas on Sun, my best college buddy who was there that night picks me up, says hey, Jacob is in town and invited us over for grouper tacos. Jason and Jacob were FR year people I met.. both a part of that night, Jacob brought the keg to my tent. Thing is, we haven’t hung out in 15 yrs aside from some chance encounters.
What are the chances that these same 2 dudes that were main players from that best college memory, happening around Clemson hoops, and it’s the 3 of us hanging out as I land from the Elite 8!!!! Pure Clemson Fam Magic. Grouper was awesome and a great night of old guy reminiscing.
Left Jacob’s, slept on Jason’s 30 ft sailboat anchored in the Ashley River, woke up Mon to a beautiful sunrise, and then hopped in the car and have been on Lake Keowee with my family ever since. Headed to Clemson today or tomorrow.
Monday Masters practice round badges that Jason set me up with to ends this trip.
I love my Clemson experience, my Clemson friends and family, and am so grateful for all it’s meant in my life. What a week!!!!!

Yes, he will forget who he loaned it to every now and then, and if the folks that he loans it to wasn't honest, he would most likely never get it back bc he has had to post pics the way that a normal camera takes pictures LOLOL

I was camped at LJ that same weekend. It was crazy how it grew from a couple of tents to a small Woodstock. I can only imagine how big it would have gotten had social media been prevalent. Napster was the only thing we used our laptops for at the time.
Side note: A couple of those streakers were friends of mine and are now highly elected state officials here in SC. Had camera phones been around their political careers may have been shorter.

Easily 1000-1500 at peak, which is crazy because it started out with a 10-20 of us "leftovers" from the NC State game. Camping for basketball and football tickets really became an event that was akin to tailgating for a year or two after that night.
The cops and security guards seem to enjoy the debauchery as much as we did. The whole place went nuts when Rick Barnes showed up with those pizzas. I would love to hear his account of that night. Someone high up in the administration had to tell the cops and guards to stand down. Giving us the green light to enjoy the moment to its fullest.
At some point in the night, I ran back to my house behind the ESSO, to grab a laptop because a couple of guys and girls around our tent had never heard The Ballad of Curtis Loew. That is blasphemy not to be tolerated. Every red-blooded, southern citizen should know that song by heart.

I know that Dabo would order pizzas for the people that would camp out for FB tickets, and he he has ordered pizzas for the students working on all the stuff for home coming also. The things that Dabo has spent a lot cash on to look out for students and close friends like the fancy golf cart he bought for what's he name ( mind went blank) the guy that could tell you what happen in a game 20 years ago. But without a doubt has proven that he cares for Clemson students and other Clemson folks, and if people don't know that by now, they will never know just how much he loves just about everything Clemson, and bc of his love for Clemson is why I love Dabo, and it's bc of the kind of man that he is. I don't believe what some has said about Dabo being fake, bc there isn't anything fake about what he feels for Clemson and the people of Clemson.
I'm sure he would be discrete about it, but I would bet there has been Clemson people that he has helped out financially to help them out of a not so good of situations, and I bet there has been somebody that has never paid him back and he's never rode them about it bc that is the type of man that Dabo Swinney is and I believe that....
