Speaking of the Masters, I'm in a dilemma.

2

Apr 8, 2023, 11:25 AM

Or at least I should be.

1. Brooks Koepka, Nole, is leading. I should root for him. No problem.
2. Koepka, LIV golfer. I have no use for LIV. No way should I root for a LIV golfer.
3. So, I should root for John Rahm. Except I've never been a Rahm fan.

What to do, what to do?

Easy solution: Root for Sam Bennett. If he could stay in contention who would not be rooting for an amateur to win the Masters?

Realistic solution: Hope that someone else (Morikawa, Speith, Hovland, Day, etc.) gets hot and wins.

But, I'm still back to my dilemma. What if Koepka is in the final group on Sunday? What if it boils down to Koepka vs. Rahm? Who will I be cheering for?

I know what my head says. My head says, "Don't root for Koepka." But, what will my heart be saying on Sunday afternoon?

Note - It's a fairly long explanation as to why I have such negative feelings about LIV. If naybody wants to discuss it we should do so in another forum. I only put this post here because someone else had started a Masters post.

swings. The ruling class used to say that those kinds of swings would never "hold up" under pressure. Then, golfers like Jim Furyk came along and won majors with them.

It will be interesting to see if Bennett can keep it going, or if/when the bubble bursts for him.

Speaking of Bennett, one of the announcers said, "Is it just me, or does he look like Dabo?"

My wife just said that at certain angles he looks like a really young Dabo. I didn’t see it at first but I do now.

Arnie said let your swing be your swing. Look at what has happened to the guy who wears orange uses cobra and played at Tenn. Sorry my 75 year old brain would not allow me to remember his name😁

Apr 8, 2023, 12:16 PM

Sorry BretFSU. I like the fact that golfers have a choice as to league they want to play. Makes the game more interesting. Choices in anything is good.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No problem with choices.

Apr 8, 2023, 1:57 PM

They made their choice. But, they wanted to remain in the PGA as well. And, when they couldn't they blasted the PGA.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nonsensical argument.

Apr 8, 2023, 6:27 PM

People from the European and Asian golf tours play PGA events all the time. Of the four majors only one of is even PGA related. The British Open, the U.S. Open, and the Masters are totally independent of the PGA. And then there’s the players championship as well.

Using your argument, people like Gary Player wouldn’t have existed.

Using your argument, you would have virtually no Asians or Europeans playing in America.

This is nothing but an emotional argument by people because it’s tied to the Middle East and Saudi Arabia.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope.

Apr 8, 2023, 8:15 PM

There are rules. If you play on the European or PGA Tour there are things like minimum number of tournaments played in a year. Top Euro players (like Rory) have to decide which tour they are going to play on. Rory is not a member of the European Tour, for example.

PGA Tour has a rule that you must apply for and receive an exemption if you want to play an event on another tour when a PGA event is scheduled. (And, you are limited to only a couple of exemptions a year.)

Greg Norman convinced these guys that the LIV Tour would go to court and get that rule thrown out. They believed him and took the money. Then they started complaining when they were removed from PGA Tour.

If they just wanted to play the LIV tour, I would have no problem with that.

As for the Majors - The Masters, British Open and US open are not PGA events. They set there own criteria for who is eligible. That is why there are 18 LIV golfers who teed it up on Thursday in Augusta.

I would be opposed to LIV golf if the money came from Argentina or Canada or Disney World so long as the players who joined that league continued to fight the PGA Tour and blast the PGA Tour for being "unfair and vindictive" as some of the nicer things they have said.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I didn’t say there were not rules

Apr 8, 2023, 11:02 PM

But it is a fact that people play on multiple tours. People on the European tour also play the PGA. People on the Asian tour also play on the PGA. You’re missing the point because you’re butt hurt over LIV.

Golf is not a team sport. You’re not under contract. If you want to play multiple events and multiple tours you can. Get off your high horse!

Bret, I find the whole deal tenuous and hypocritical

Apr 8, 2023, 12:54 PM

1. The PGA player with the biggest mouth, Rory McIlroy, is healthy and 17 strokes behind Koepka after two days. It does not appear LIV golfers are hapless and uncompetitive.
2. The PGA has successfully mounted a smear campaign with the American public against LIV based on a false premise of patriotism.
3. I worked closely with the Saudi Air Force from 1998-2005. I know many Saudi attributes and blemishes better than 99% of Americans.
4. As for 9/11, the Saudi royal family did not plan or support the attacks against the USA and the trade centers.
5. Yes. Osama Bin Laden, one of dozens of Bin Laden half brothers & 1st cousins from the Bin Laden construction family, and a faction of Saudi and Arab rebels planned and led the attacks.
6. Still the Saudi royal family, specifically the young Crown Prince, has taken billions from the Bin Laden family and thrown many in jail. Even those not involved with distant half brother OBL.
7. As for murdered reporter Jamal Khashoggi, who was viciously butchered in the Saudi Embassy in Turkey, he was a classmate & colleague of Osama Bin Laden and considered a traitor, spy and enemy of the Saudi state. Khashoggi spent time with Bin Laden in Afghanistan. His death was definitely sanctioned by the Crown Prince and above. It is likely the real truth will never be known.
8. As for the LIV golfers, they are definitely onboard for the money. No surprise or hidden agenda there. Sign me up for $100 million if it is on the table. Root for Koepka.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My view, quickly, of LIV.

2

Apr 8, 2023, 1:54 PM

I have no problem with guys taking the money and joining LIV. Easy example - Kevin NA was reportedly offered 30 million dollars to sign a 2 year contract with LIV. Life changing money, for sure. Financial security for he and his family for sure. I understand him taking the money.

But, then - just leave and shut up. Some of the guys (Koepka included) didn't do that. They wanted to have all the money of LIV but still have the prestige of playing with the PGA. And, they got their feelings hurt when they were told they couldn't. It's like a guy signing a contract with IBM and getting mad when Microsoft told him he was no longer welcome in their building.

Koepka, Mickelson, et. al. should have just left the PGA and moved on with their lives.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No argument Bret

1

Apr 8, 2023, 6:03 PM

You do your homework. On the other side, the PGA seems to be enacting many of the the suggestions Mickelson gave them before he moved to LIV to stem even more departures. Unsure LIV will survive or deserves to survive, I just believe the PGA patriotism hand has been overplayed when it's really about golfers taking free money.

Monopolies and oligarchies.

Because that’s the argument you’re making.

And the guys that started running their mouth did so because they were attacked and smeared. They didn’t run their mouth until people started attacking them.

LIV could at least play 72 holes, not do a shotgun start like hour local company’s scramble, and get rid of the contrived team format. Also stop blaring music during play.

Root for Rahm. Like my wife, he went to ASU which is only one letter off from your school so that should be close enough to avoid pulling for a LIV guy.

What is wrong with having another league that is less demanding and pays more? The PGA had a monopoly and they did not want to share. We buy oil from Saudi Arabia and most of our clothes drugs and other junk from China. Our leaders seem to laundry money from other foreign countries but it’s wrong for Phil to play in another league.

I have no problem with Phil leaving the PGA and joining LIV. The operative phrase is "leaving the PGA."

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: See my reply elsewhere.

Apr 8, 2023, 6:11 PM

The PGA players should be thanking Phil, the way he’s been treated is unfair. The PGA magically found BILLIONS of dollars more to pay their purses because of him. That said, he was the next Arnold Palmer, fab favorite, beloved and could’ve been a great PGA announcer (was supposed to take over for Nick Faldo). Apparently he needed the instant 200 million due to his gambling habits, but who can hate on someone for making a decision based on a better economic opportunity (see my other post about where all money comes from).

I don’t get the hate for LIV.

Apr 8, 2023, 6:20 PM

Are you people against capitalism? Yes. I’m being a bit facetious. But I don’t understand why people hate this so much. It’s more of ann emotional argument than an irrational one.

And don’t give me the morality argument. The people that love to virtue signal the most, Hollywood celebrities and musicians, routinely go to Saudi Arabia and other middle Eastern/Muslim countries for 1 or 2 million to sing or make an appearance for a birthday party.

When the hypocrites on the left stop doing things like that, and worshiping Obama, who killed American citizens via drone strikes without due process, I’ll start worrying about LIV.

Actually, on the list of things I care about, LIV doesn’t make the grade. Even if that list had 100 things on it LIV wouldn’t make the list.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A rational argument not irrational

Anybody remember the original AFL or ABA?

1

Apr 8, 2023, 8:21 PM [ in reply to I don’t get the hate for LIV. ]

What if Joe Namath had signed a 400K contract with the Jets (which he did) and then imme3diately said he should be able to play in the NFL as well? What if he said he should be able to decide each week which league he would play in?

Same with Julius Erving in the ABA.

I have no problem with guys who took the money from the LIV league (made a financial decision) and have not tried to force their way into PGA tournaments. (Kevin Na, Charles Howell being two examples.)

I do have a problem with people like Greg Norman, Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and others who took the money but still want to play on the PGA Tour.

The NFL is a team sport. Golf is an individual sport. You’re making a ridiculous comparison.
