Some hard truth from last night. We lost BOTH lines of scrimmage, again.

This has turned into a recurring theme with this team.

The defensive front played well early on, but then had no answer late when Miami literally ran it down our throats, all the way down the field. Our DBs did yeomans work for the most part, as we could not get much pressure at all on their QB making his FIRST start.

Butt, it was our lack of an OFFENSIVE LINE that truly cost us. We can yammer all we want about the play calling, but if the other team is in your backfield at the snap, Houdini himself couldn't make a play work. And, once again, we get the obligatory false starts, which kill an already anemic offense. I even had a separate thread yesterday about Blake Miller getting at least one a game, and he did not disappoint me, getting that out of the way early on. This offensive line is a SIEVE, and that is being kind. Cade literally had someone in his face that he had to avoid before he could even think about making a play most of the night.

I saw several little used scoks with posts about how dumb that last play was. The PLAY wasn't dumb. It was called because everybody in the state of Florida figured Shipley would get the ball. And Shipley DIDN'T get the ball because our coaches had zero faith, rightly so, that we could block well enough to gain 1+ yard when everybody knew that. And, once again, Miami had a spy on Cade, who was in his face well behind the line of scrimmage, due to not being blocked.

Mario Cristobal delivered the ultimate indictment on our offense last night, when he purposely ran out the clock to get to OT, instead of trying some Hail Mary. He was banking on our offense being more inept than his in short field situations, and / or that our kicker would miss, again. For once, the kicking game was solid. That is little solace given what the rest of it turned out to be, just what Cristobal envisioned.

That streak of not having two losses in a row in the same season probably ends next week, as well. Notre Dame is beatable, but not by the team I saw on the field for us last night. That is some hard truth to swallow.

Unfortunately ND is in two weeks.

He get to play at State next week. Which could be ugly the way our O is playing this year.

The play call was for Ship to get it. Straight run play. Cade just decided to do his own thing.

David, at some point, will Cade lose the team? If you are playing Hero ball and going rogue, it better work otherwise you will have bigger problems.

This post is from a fan who really understands what is going on and where the real problems lie.

Not that it matters now, but Cade pulled the handoff and took it himself on the final play. It was a handoff, not an RPO or designed QB run. He made that decision himself. The coaches wanted Shipley to run it for a yard.

And likely fumble it again. Why Shipley is even in when we’re in the red zone is beyond me.

Really good kid but not a D1 player with his inability to secure the ball.

There are some good, post game reports. Do yourself a favor & read them...

The fact we were even in that situation is the problem.

Agree we were manhandled on the line.Miami ran it straight at us for over 9 minutes in the 4th quarter. We deserved to lose with turnovers again plaguing us.

However, the truth is Cade starting his 8th game decided to pull the ball and run when the call was a straight handoff. Hopefully he is still running laps this morning. Dabo and Cade confirmed that Cade made the call on his own and it was not an RPO play, but was to be a straight handoff.

I am no coach, but I don't understand why our biggest most powerful back is not typically used on the goal line over and over. Why not use Mafah over Shipley on goal line situations and frankly more often elsewhere?

This is not a fundamentally sound team and that is extremely disappointing.

The most frustrating thing to me as a chair bound fan watching on tv,

1

was that the camera view, mostly side on, would show what looked to be a clogged up middle, and then, on nearly EVERY PLAY, their back would squirt through for 3, 4, 6, 8 yards anyway. How could we let this happen play after play after play?

The announcers kept going on about how conservative a game Miami was calling. Why not, when you are having so much success running the ball? We only stopped them when they got "behind schedule" (another overused announcer term) and had to go away from the run. And, once their #4 decided to get in the game, we couldn't stop the pass either.

I have kept silent in the Great Assistant Coach Debate for the most part. But, our total ineptitude along the offensive line, with players with a lot of reps under their belts, is changing my mind on that. We need a top flight offensive line coach, from a program that is known for being able to pound the football running wise. Teams that can run the ball, can throw it when they want if they have the skill players, and we do.

The fact that our most dominant defensive line guys are true freshmen is also reinforcing an old argument. I think it is time for a new strength and conditioning program. Our guys, especially on the offensive line, are getting physically manhandled whenever we run into a good team, of which there are a lot more on our schedule this year than in years past.

If the 10+ game winning streak is truly down the tubes, as seems most likely, it is time to bite the bullet and get some guys off the bench onto the field, and see who really wants to play this game of football. Has NIL, coupled with our much vaunted culture, made our guys fat and happy to the point they really don't feel the losses like we fans do? I cannot believe that is true, but the fact that I even ask the question is telling. I never would have even thought of that question in years past.

we were down 3 defensive linemen in the 4 quarter

once Mascoll went out, and Capehart got banged up, there was not a lot they could do.

I can't make any excuses for the Oline's performance.

The O line did not protect Cade and created very little room for the backs. Had we managed to score the TD in OT, it is very iffy that we would also have scored on the 2 pt conversion.

There is room for improvement as there are 5 games left and managing to hold on to the ball instead of fumbling repeatedly near the goal line as we have done this season, would go a long way to posting wins, but regardless, this is just an average football team at this point. Very average.

I'm still baffled why mafah isn't on the field most of the time.
