Moving to Fort Mill...
Jun 7, 2016, 3:02 PM

|
OK, I am the consummate lurker, haven't posted in forever. I know this is a great risk to post here with the reputation of the Lounge, but I am moving the family from our hometown in Lowbottom and am headed to Fort Mill. Don't know a soul there. Schools are outstanding. Any recommendations on where to start other than that?? LT

Most people don't know that they invented gridlock in Fort Mill.

Because those pesky Catawba Indians were always coming around, then a mill when Colonel Angus Springs decided to make sheets and linens.

Rent first, buy later. Working in Fort Mill. Kids are 12 and 8. Would like to stay around FM area, possibly Tega Cay.

I would just stay in a tent in Cabelas. I think I make mortgage payment to them already.

Tega Cay isn't a bad place, but they have plenty of their

own issues. There's always a water or sewer leak over there. There's ONE road in and out, if something happens to block that you're stuck in or locked out. Also, a lot of the older construction in Tega Cay was shoddy, you would not believe some of the things I've seen in those houses. Like, daylight between where the roof meet the top of an interior wall kind of stuff. Got to make sure if you're buying over there to GET A GOOD INSPECTION FROM SOMEONE YOU TRUST.
There's also terrible traffic on 160 coming from both ways and it can be a nightmare to deal with during rush hours, even if you're just trying to get somewhere in FM. I wouldn't exclude Rock Hill in your search, there might be a slight give on the quality of schools, but it's really pretty negligible. South Carolina schools are South Carolina schools. There will be more rentals and purchase opportunities in Rock Hill than Fort Mill, but both real estate markets are overvalued.
Rock Hill will have a lot more sports and rec opportunities for the kids, but much larger town, much larger tax base to pay for that stuff. It's also easier to get where you're going on old Hwy 21 than on I-77 or Hwy 160 during rush hours. Still ain't pleasant. RH tacks on an addition whopping 7 or 8 minutes to get to anything you want to do in Charlotte, so that's really not a problem either.
The York County YMCA is a great thing to join with kids that age, and they have a FM location as well. TONS of activities for the kids and the family with a Y membership, and Camp Cherokee 35 minutes up the road at Kings Mountain is a rite of passage for York County kids.
Feel free to t-mail me any specific questions you have about the area, I'm more than happy to do what I can to help. Because, helping is what I do.

Right across from the Winthrop campus there is a McDonalds. Back behind that is some really good affordable living. Lots of kids. Rent is VERY reasonable.
