Really don’t know about this. I think if he was going to commit to Clemson, he would’ve waited to see our offensive progression.
There’s some factors at play here.
First, you’ve got the unknown about our offensive progression. Unless Matthews is a program guy.
Second, Tennessee is fresh off of the allegations and sanctions. This may not matter to many, but I do know that Matthews’ family had been biggest with Clemson throughout and really like the family.
Lastly, and the most interesting, was the crystal ball the other day to Tennessee. This is what concerns me most. With that just being published, and Matthews now sets a date right after, it could or could not be telling.
But, I think we have a chance. He is certainly a grounded young player, and seems to be smart about life. Now I’m not saying going to Tennessee will provide nothing for your development as a person, but come on now. It’s not like Clemson has been founded of committing over 200 infractions over the last 10 years.
It’s a Sammy Watkins type of recruit. A program changer. We must have him.

Wesco didn't have to see our offensive changes in order to come, but Matthews may not be the same. Far as I'm concerned he's going to be a Vol, but would be delighted if he makes the right decision.

Come on. You don't believe the nonsense about Matthews' concerns about offenses, OC's, etc. All window dressing. The deciding factor here is private Knoxville $ buying the kid. He took the best $ offer. That is what the college game is now for most of the 5 star recruits. Not all of them, but most. Mind you, I don't blame the players. Who wouldn't want to get paid handsomely as an 18 yr old.

In most cases today.... Yes! The game of recruiting has changed. You same folks that swear it hasn't are going to be very sad, when our Tigers get left behind when it come to natty's going forward. Great coaches paired with tbe portal are almost unbeatable. Great coaches that refuse to use it can be elite, but the game has always and always will be about Jimmy's and Joe's. Get as many 5 stars as the riles allow paired with great coaches and it's game over. That is the sad reality

He’s a Vol…. We have 0.0% chance of landing him at this point. He wanted an established offense and we don’t have that yet. If he waited until the December signing period we would have a shot of flipping him, but not now.

Established offense narrative is hilarious, Tennessee had a good offense one time in the last decade but sure let’s go with that lol. Matthews is good but I don’t understand why everyone’s sleeping on Wesco/Moore there’s a reason why Wesco is rated higher.

ole chubby boy up there knows his way around an offense pretty good. Hopefully the guy we have know does as well. If we can start lighting it up on the scoreboard then we'll get back in the mix with these guys. But we need to destroy people.. Like beat the brakes off people.

I know right? Like the most important thing here is how did Josh Huepel get so fat and pudgy coming from being QB1 Heisman? Man he is so fat compared to his playing days. And he dresses like a ten year old. But yes, he is good at offense I suppose if you’re into that kind of thing.

I agree about Wesco, he’s projected as a much high ceiling guy and currently ranked a lot higher (number 3 WR vs 9 in the class), but him wanting an established offense isn’t a narrative, it’s what has come from his camp—- just passing along the reason that decided it.

No ill will intended know it’s hard to read intent just don’t get how one year means established offense but to each their own. Would’ve loved Matthews but the more tape I watch on Wesco/Moore the more impressed I am especially with Wesco that kid is different.

Oh I’m right there with you, of the guys we could’ve had, the two we got to any list I want and that would include Matthews and Wesco. Moore is a stud, Wesco might be the best in his class. I agree it’s an odd hill to die on but Matthews thinks it matters.

He has been bought by an SEC team it appears. He would have started from day one here and would have been a game changer. Wish we could get him but move on to another if it does not happen.

Needless to say, THAT covers a LOT of great WRs.
Considering we couldn’t attract ANY highly regarded WRs the past couple of cycles, we should probably not get too greedy when we get a top-5 and a Top-80 overall recruit (regardless of position) at WR both the same year.
We’d love Mike Mathews, but we’re okay without him if he’s not All In.
