So Reggie Bush is suing the NCAA...

Aug 23, 2023, 10:03 AM

Apparently RB is claiming that a "false and highly offensive" statement made by the NCAA maliciously attacked his character and substantially and irreparably damaged his reputation.

The NCAA statement in question was issued to ESPN, along with other media outlets, on July 28, 2021, in response to an inquiry about the possibility of Bush having his records and participation restored in light of changes to name, image and likeness rules.

Here is the statement in question:

"Although college athletes can now receive benefits from their names, images and likenesses through activities like endorsements and appearances, NCAA rules still do not permit pay-for-play type arrangements. The NCAA infractions process exists to promote fairness in college sports. The rules that govern fair play are voted on, agreed to and expected to be upheld by all NCAA member schools."

I don't think that filing this lawsuit is going to help RB's ongoing attempts to get his Heisman Trophy reinstated.

The attorney representing RB said, "The NCAA's statement is completely false and highly offensive. The NCAA knew Mr. Bush was never even accused of, involved in, much less sanctioned for any 'pay-for-play arrangement,' which never occurred."

So in his mind, RB and his family members accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, trips, and a free house in San Diego does not constitute "pay for play"?

the NCAA's statement is a complete load of self-serving manure.

NIL benefits are totally completely and entirely pay-for-play type arrangements, and anyone who says or thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.

100%. College football makes NFL agents squeamish.***

Agreed. With rare exception, the NIl expenditures by companies will not recoup the money in additional sales.

Well, what he did was get a loan from an agent and then refused to pay it back after he didn't sign with them. It wasn't pay for play, it was pay for representation--which was still against NCAA rules at the time... he broke the rules, he shouldn't get it back, that said, he's made more money from having it taken from him than he ever would have keeping it. All those wins were vacated, there for he has no stats to qualify. It's so weird though, my eyes saw it, he was the best player and he didn't use PED's to do it. Is what it is.

The NCAA doesn't award the Heisman trophy. I believe the Manhattan Athletic club does that award.

Correct, but...

the Heisman Trophy Trust has long maintained that because Bush's 2005 season was vacated by the NCAA, he was not eligible to win. However, if the NCAA were to officially restore his records, Bush's trophy could be returned.

Can't win it if no stats (vacated wins) so they are hand and hand connected.

If they don’t return his heisman they should take Johnny Manziels from him.

with Bush still lobbying for his Heisman to be reinstated 30 years from now.

The Heisman was once for the best college player

and could add money to a contract. Now it is a media hyped award that means nothing, although it still adds money.

I’m sure for historical reasons Reggie Bush would want his name back in the record books. No matter what the NCAA does though, no one will ever forget that Bush was one of the most electrifying and best players EVER to play college football. He’ll always be able to go back and watch the Heisman ceremonies and all of the games that he absolutely dominated. Hope that Bush’s Heisman is eventually reinstated but even if it isn’t everyone knows what Bush was

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He should have thought about that...

2

Aug 23, 2023, 12:22 PM

before he and his family accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in impermissible benefits and inducements. He 100% knew that what they were doing was against NCAA rules. I don't have any sympathy for him.

Reggie Bush is a stand-up guy

When the Saints drafted him, he came in and worked hard for his new community. The Saints were terrible, but in Katrina’s aftermath, Reggie would show up every time a grocery store re-opened or there was any sort of significant recovery event. He put his shoulder to the grindstone and became an important piece of N’awlins rebirth, on the field and off. Count me in Reggie’s corner. Restore his Heisman.
