So my impressions of the Gator Bowl game....

The crowd was great. I thought the KY fans were (on average) good-natured, though most definitely drinking the SEC kool-aid.

The good (and there was a lot of it)

The O Line played pretty well. I noticed MUCH better use of hands, better footwork and a LOT more push in short yardage situations with better LEVERAGE (guys playing lower, not standing up anymore). And playing through the whistle. Coach Luke was a great hire---I anticipate much better play next year if this is any indication of what he did in a few weeks.

The return of Williams helped a lot. Guys were definitely getting open. But, we still don't have that elite deep threat or boundary receiver that can stretch a defense over the top. We also had some nice play from Adam Randall....hopefully this game can be used to build his confidence. I'd like to see him play a little more physical and use his arms better. He tends to wait on the ball instead of attacking it.

Cade played extremely well when we played with tempo. But, see below: it's a tale of two stories.

Mafah gave us an MVP performance. Not much else can be said than what has already been said. Shipley ran hard, but still has problems seeing the right running lanes. He did play very well on KR. Just hope he's OK after a pretty nasty fall out of bounds.

I thought Carter and Woodaz played extremely well. And my son got to meet Sammy Brown, who most definitely looks the part according to son of RB--though my son is a little taller, Brown is just built like a LB. But you can just tell---this kid is going to be special. Nice kid, btw.

Shelton Lewis played pretty well. KY threw at him pretty much all afternoon. For a guy who really got thrown into the fire, he responded with the game-ending INT. Good for him, because KY went at him excessively, IMO.

Khalil Barnes is a ballhawk. He just continues to make plays and force turnovers.

Weitz....huge momentum changer on that 52-yard (and 1 inch) FG.

Now, for the bad

There were some really bad reads by the safeties and LB's that led to two scores. Not going to name names, but this is something that the coaches need to work on and this will be good film.

Cade is still having problems going through his progressions and seeing the field. Stellato was wide open on what should have been an easy TD. Cade didn't even look at him. I could really see how Cade was scanning the field and not trusting his eyes and yes, he tends to "lock on" to a receiver and he doesn't really look safeties off the ball. He did once, but that was about it. He has no pocket awareness--he's lucky he wasn't hurt after that blindside sack when he limped off the field. He also struggles when stepping up in the pocket--my son (up and coming HS QB) noticed he doesn't throw to receivers so they can use their bodies or inside leverage to get to the ball---he only throws when he sees open receivers. But our OC has got to work on some of these things with Cade or I see more problems next year.

Kick coverage is a dumpster fire. Big changes needed here. Dabo knows it and I'm sure he's going to address it this off season. That can't happen against Jawja.

The officiating: Pure trash. They didn't call blatant holding, hits out of bounds, facemasks, and other infractions against KY. They even threw a flag when a kick went out of the end zone, which set Dabo off....these guys couldn't officiate a Pop Warner game.h

All in all, a great performance that I think will help a lot of the younger guys progress.

Thanks Ridgeland. I agree with pretty much everything you say. I often wonder why Mafah runs right through the line for substantial gains and Ship seems to be running into our blockers or into opposing players. And I agree about Cade's pocket presence/awareness. He needs to grow a pair of eyes in the back of his head. Or, his hearing needs to improve. It cost us against FSU and could have been a devastating hit yesterday. Finally, shout out to Aidan Swanson, who was great this year. He's coming back for one more go around. Happy New Year! And....GooooooTigers!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shelton Lewis was constantly targeted because he was beaten or out of position constantly. I recognize he’s a Freshman but he was a huge amount of off season work to replace #2!

I don't think he was out of position "constantly"....if anything, he played off the LOS too deep that allowed too much space early in the game. That got better as the game went on. Just my own opinion, but I think he played pretty well overall and played better as the game went on.

Question. You said the oline played good. So in your opinion, how'd we give them 8 sacks? All on Cade? BTW, that's the most Kentucky had all year. We didn't have any opt outs on the o side. We essentially traded Williams for beaux which was a net win.

Overall, good assessment however I would add a huge BUT. A 3 point miracle from a lot of help from 4 turnovers to a cellar dweller Kentucky team who didn't beat a p5 with a winning record. We got a lot of work to get back to a good team.

And we only started using mafah after ship got hurt. Disagree with you on the refs. Thought they called a good game but that's subjective.

I think the sacks were more of the "coverage sack" variety due to Cade holding the ball too long. He had open receivers, but either double-clutched or didn't trust his eyes. He even said in his postgame comments that "a couple of the sacks were due to me holding the ball too long". So yeah, I stand by my analysis. O Line played much better and to the point where we basically could run at will in the 4th quarter. KY was absolutely gassed.

As to the refs, there were 4 egregious non-calls. They did NOT call a good game.

1) Late hit on Stellato
2) Two facemasks on Cade
3) Blatant holding on the kickoff return for TD
4) Another late hit on Cade out of bounds

Kentucky beat a decent P5 Louisville with a winning record.

The 8 sacks was horrible plus add in the grounding penalty or penalties, Cade was running for his life multiple times especially when Def had stunts which was often. The OL when lined up man-man, they held their own. Our RB blocking is still horrible, Mafah whiffed on pretty easy block that caused another nasty sack. I do think the OL got better on short yardage but they still need work.

I said that the O Line played "Better" than they have before the Matt Luke hire. And they most certainly did. Is there room for improvement? Of course. But they are going in the right direction.

Also, we completely dominated them in time of possession. Big reason why we pretty much ran at will in the 4th quarter.

I am glad to see Khalil Barnes sharpening his game. He missed some critical tackles in a few games earlier and he has upped us game and starting to play w some purpose the last few games. Looking fwd to seeing him play more! Go Tigers!

Would be interesting to know why CK wasn't rolled out more from the pocket, particularly after about the 4th sack. Threw accurately the the couple time it was done going right. Given his limitations thus far, don't feel he can be a pure pocket QB unless issues get cleaned up prior to next season. Also was surprised Ship wasn't used more in the pass game. Don't think he was in the last two or so games, but could be wrong.

Cade played much better when the tempo was accelerated. Was that because he had to play instinctively and not second-guess himself? Ship wasn't used in the pass game and that was puzzling to me, I noticed it as well.
