We always hear this separation thing with WRs, and a lot of guys talk

about speed a few years ago and how we don’t have it now. So I looked up 40 times for some guys.

Nuk Hopkins 4.57
Tee Higgins 4.54
Mike Williams 4.53
Justyn Ross 4.63

Who are the speed burners? Did I miss some?

I think the key difference in the guys above and what we have is the QB.

Deshaun and Trevor weren’t afraid to put a ball up and let WRs make a play on it. I think the description “50/50 ball” was actually generated during Trevor’s run when he had Tee going up and getting the ball.

But it wasn’t some mythical separation that made our championship runs. It was the QBs mastering a back shoulder ball or throwing it where the WRs have a chance to make a play. We’ve very much depended on QBs vision and willingness to give their receivers a chance.

We’re not seeing that yet from Cade. He is too focused on someone getting wide open, and even then he’s not seeing the field well and ultimately goes with a check down or panics and takes a sack. From Kentucky and all season, a lot of Cades sacks this seasons were his fault. Indecision in the pocket and panicking under the first sign of a pressure and not stepping up are the very biggest issues on offense.

It isn’t separation or blinding speed with guys just sprinting yards in front of DBs. There are options everywhere in this system, but we need the game to slow down for Cade and him to increase his pocket awareness and downfield vision.

With who we have and the WRs toning in, we have a really good WR room. If grows into veteran form, the sky’s the limit.

Mark the tape, Ramona! 🙂

The four guys you listed didn’t need to be the fastest - they all have elite athleticism and an absolute conviction that a ball in the air near them is their property. They are also pretty good completing the catch and getting yards after the catch.

By the way that must be J Ross combine time after all his injuries because he could get past most DBs in college. He was not a 4.63 guy coming out of Phenix City.

Ross was never flying by everyone.

He had a great ability to adjust on 50/50 balls. And some guy named Lawrence throwing it.

He was effortlessly fast. I guarantee he is a low 4.5 guy when fully healthy.

What all those guys have in common is they high point the ball and are great on the 50-50 balls. We don’t see a lot of that from our current crop.

If Trevor or Deshaun were giving them chances.

How many back shoulder throws have we seen from Cade? Zero?

How many high point opportunities? Virtually nil.

I've either been to or watched virtually every game since 1987.

If you've been watching the 2nd and 3rd levels, and paying attention to things the coaches have said, there is no doubt Cade is not seeing the field well and taking needless sacks.

There are guys open. I've seen it with my own eyes. Guys are free and Cade just doesn't see them. If I remember correctly there was one wide open fly pattern ("w/ separation") missed with Stellato having steps vs Kentucky, and I think it was Dabo who alluded to taking sacks on the QB.

It was even more evident when you're at the games. There are guys in space almost every play. The system is proven. It takes experience. A great QB will get out of pressure and see the field, like Penix was doing the other day. Was he always great? What about Duggan at TCU? It sure was nice that he was an experienced senior. He thrived in Riley's offense. If you want to talk about watching games, you should check a few of those TCU games out. Duggan led them to a national championship game if you recall. What did you know about ol Max prior to seeing him as an experienced senior?

Cade is growing. A typical developing QB. Not ready made NFL like we were blessed to have at one point.

That was a sweet rebuttal though <img border=">" Feel free to add. Take care.

Its a sign of the times. Younger generation can't reason and make arguments. I post on cfb reddit why FSU should've been in the cfp instead of cheating Michigan - with citations to the B1G commissioner's 13 page letter listing all of UM's violations - and I get emojis, gifs, and "cope" as the reply.

Separation is earned in multiple ways

- Technique
- Release of the line
- Quickness
- Physicality
- Tendency recognition on the DB's covering them
- Ability to read coverage.
- Not tipping your routes to the DB.

All of this is a small part of what makes a good WR and none of it really has to do with 40 yard times, and very little to do with play calling, on the surface.

I just said about the same to my brother a few days ago. Cade does have issues. In spite of those that say him nyit starting from game 4 or 5 last year delayed his development I continue to say he was never meant to be or ready to be the starter that early in his career. His proper path was to step in next year ( his third ) after DJ was to go Pro after this year. None of that materialized for multiple reasons and here we are. I don't know what Cade's ceiling is but I think we see significant improved play from him early next year.

Speed is what many on here have cited.

Please let me know where you see each guy failing at those metrics. Keep in mind we didn't have Cole and Antonio most of the year. I'm sincerely interested in that list and how it applies the guys we have.

Cade needs to improve his field vision and pocket presence. Missing guys and taking sacks. If you've been paying attention you would have heard that from staff and seen it with your own eyes. That and he needs to be a more effective run threat.

Cade will get it. I believe we've seen the positive traits. He loves Riley and is taking it all in like a sponge. He has some raw skills that need refining. Most of all, the game needs to slow down for him.

I’ve been watching games from the 2014-2020 seasons. Trevor and Deshaun were hitting wide open receivers many times. Difference is they knew how to shift the pocket and trusted their receivers.

I don’t think Cade is afraid to put it up. Dabo and Riley know we don’t have guys that can go up and get the ball, therefore that call the plays conservatively. If the receiver isn’t wide open then that ball isn’t getting thrown deep. Sure, Cade has missed seeing some guys wide open, but most of the time they are covered. Why? Because they are below average wide receivers.

The last three years it seems like a majority of our receptions were the receivers coming back to the ball resulting in no yards after the catch.
Don’t know if that is a play design or player issue.

We've never had guys that get separation on a consistent basis. What we had were recievers that bullied DBs and had a mentality that when the ball was in the air it was their's. We created one on one situations and threw the ball up and let our recievers make the play. That is partly why Deshaun had so many interceptions. We have soft recievers now that get bullied by DBs and Cade wants to throw to wide open guys. He threw some balls up early but many were picked off or nearly picked off bc he threw in to double or even triple coverage. He struggles to read the defense post snap.
