What was your first Clemson football memory?

4

Nov 5, 2023, 6:34 PM

I remember Woody Dantzler taking over at QB and that general era. The GT game stands out to me because I remember being pumped for the ‘01 game and a family member explaining to me (I was relatively young) that Clemson would never really be able to compete with GT anymore because of the ATL talent pool. Now this family member was a diehard Clemson fan and would’ve fit in on TNET just fine. But that’s the memory I have. So I always think of that conversation around the GT game and how happy that family member would’ve been the last decade and a half. They passed in ‘09.

In any case, what’s your first memory(memories) of watching Clemson football?

Our Troop 73 (Chester) got free tickets and went there. The game atmosphere made me want to be a part of that.

My first game at Clemson as a Freshman in 1966. Clemson was playing Virginia whom they had never lost to. Virginia led 35 - 18 in the 3rd qtr. The Tigers came back, led by Jimmy "The Needle" Addison, to win 40 - 35. He was selected the AP Back of the Week and the Virginia QB, Bob Davis, was selected the Sports Illustrated Back of the Week. Quite an introduction to Tiger football!

Sadly a game in the 70s against Duke that ended in a tie.

Watching from the hill in 1981

3

Nov 5, 2023, 6:56 PM

Somehow I was always on the hill for free (I’m sure friend’s parents got me in).

I had a picture of Homer Jordan from a program that I found on the ground, and I got him to sign it after the game at the paw. We were pretty much homeless at the time, so I kept it rolled up in a saltines canister until I could tape it up on the wall a couple of years later.

And seeing a Wolfpack fan wearing a full wolf costume (the game was on Halloween I believe) and Tory Holt making an absurd catch right on the paw.

Very vague memories.

I also vaguely remember West being carried off the field after beating SC. Don’t remember anything else in 1998.

99 season is the first one I recall with multiple memories and 2000 the first I can recall that I actually followed the progress of the season

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Going to the NC State game in 1998 with my dad

Nov 5, 2023, 7:16 PM

Ah, ok. We are pretty similar then. I didn’t have direct experience with those teams from the 80s and most of my memories start late 90s. Tommy Bowden pulling together some high profile wins was the peak for me. I didn’t fully understand the potential of the program like some of the older folks. It has been fun reflecting some lately due to the adversity.

Clemson-Georgia 7-7 tie in early 60's. Hal Davis returned the opening kickoff for a TD for Clemson. First play by Georgia was a 77 yard TD pass from Larry Rakestraw to tie the game. One play from scrimmage and the score was 7-7. Then all hail broke loose and we all hid underneath the stands for as bad a hailstorm, lightening and rain as I have ever seen. I hopped a ride home. Never saw the end of the game.

That game vs GT Streeter was the starter, but broke his collar bone. When he broke his collar bone, he actually stayed in for one more play and took a hit on a scramble on that play that knocked him out.

Streeter was one tough kid that went through a lot of injuries.

He lived in Daniel Square with Richardson, the back up kicker and Watts, a back-up WR. They always threw great parties.

Daniel Square.... I lived across the parking lot from them. The next year Daniel Square made headlines for a riot (I can't remember what the riot was about), but the local news was shooting in the parking lot and people were going crazy all over the place. My buddy is in the broadcast doing the running man behind the reporter.

Those were crazy days..... I am so glad social media wasn't around then. Is Daniel Square still standing??

Those years the ACC was great.... GT had athletes all over the place like Megatron. NC State had Rivers and about three or four pro bowl WRs. UNC was good, FSU was good. MD wasn't bad. When we went and got VT and Miami a few years later, it was projected to be one of the best.

To be honest, I didn't give a hoot when MD left for the Big 10, but it turned out to be a great move for them.

WOuld wake up Saturday around noon and we would watch college football on TV, 1980 ish, remember watching Clemson and he saying, now that’s a team. 1

Nov 5, 2023, 9:59 PM

In 1968 we moved to Moultrie, Ga. A next door neighbor, my dad's age, was a Clemson grad and a huge fan.

Back in those days Clemson played GT often, but not every year. And, the game was always in Atlanta. GT dominated. I just looked it up. From 1908 to 1968, GT record against Clemson was 28-2. The last time Clemson had beat them was 1945.

Well, Clemson won in 1969 (which would have been my freshman year of college) the neighbor was probably in his mid 40s.

He came over to our house, had obviously been drinking (he definitely had a drinking problem in general, not just an occassional over-imbiber). Anyway, when we opened the door he was in and was openly crying, not just sobbing, but closer to bawling. He hugged my dad, hung on, and repeated over and over again, "This is the happiest day of my life. I never thought I would live long enough to see Clemson beat Georgia Tech."
