Puzzled about a coaching decision in softball yesterday

Bottom of 6th inning, Cagle is up to bat as lead-off hitter in a 1-1 ballgame. She bunts back to the pitcher!!! makes no sense to me. She is our best homerun hitter and she is asked to bunt that late in the game with no reliable hitters behind her?? Bad coaching decision IMHO.

Couldn't figure that one out.

What makes a great teammate and player is the lack of selfishness. Pretty sure she saw something that led her to believe that a good bunt would get her on base and lead to a manufactured run. I like the fact she was looking at the big picture and trying to help her team with getting the leadoff hitter on base. No, it did not work, but I give her credit for playing the game the way it should be played.

My guess is that she saw something on the field that led her to believe

she could get a bunt down for a hit. Would be way past surprised to learn that coach had her bunting. Meant to go back and look at the infield setup to maybe see what she saw. Back to the pitcher was not what she was after.

I remember one time my youngest son, who batted 4th, came up to bat in a tie game with runner on 1st. He is looking at 3rd base, his coach turns his back to him, my son calls time and starts to walk towards third. The coach then embarrass's him by saying get in there hit a dang HR and end the game, I don't have you batting 4th to bunt! He gets in the box and on the second pitch hit's one into woods, wins the game. The coach came over to me and said he is to slow to bunt but he knew if they threw a straight pitch the game was over! Fun times!

Val should never take the bat out of her own hands like that. She was one pitch from the lead and would have had to help scoring from first and so far this group hasn't shown that ability consistently against quality opponents!

Here is a clue. If there are no reliable behind her, it will be a long year.

Sometimes the player calls it with or without the coach's ok.

My guess is she saw something and went with it. Like you, I’d rather her swing the bat but I can live with it. Knoller being out for a few weeks is a big loss. She was out at Georgia too. She protects the spot behind Val. Now with Garcia out we were two sticks short in the lineup yesterday. Get healthy and this team will produce more runs.
