Pride before the fall.

Seems to me that this Bible verse may be playing out before our eyes. Coach’s arrogance and self-importance, combined with his huge contract and tons of money have changed him. No longer is he the humble underdog that built championships from the ground up. He has changed and is unwilling to adjust because of his pride.

I like Dabo. I hope he becomes humble enough to look inside himself and realize that his team has failed to meet expectations this year and admit his failures and build back better. Just my humble opinion.

I would love to see evidence from all the people that claim to know what Dabo is or is not thinking. I read references that people "know" him and what he is about. Probably have not been within 50 feet of the man.

One hundred million dollars and being put on a pedestal will change a person. Not always for the better.

I would argue that he is exactly the same, but the game has changed around him.

Clearly his unwillingness to embrace those changes has put us at a disadvantage that we do not have the talent/coaching to overcome.

Put me in the 98.5%. If he gets serious about using the portal and the NIL game steps up, we’ll be back in the top 10 mix. If we go another off-season without meaningful incoming transfers, we’ll be lucky to win 7-8 games next year.

Not going to happen.....

Oct 23, 2023, 11:37 PM

Imagine if you were the CEO of a publicly traded company that had been extremely successful for several years. Then for a couple of years the competition caught up.

Would you go out to the market and say....."hello stockholders....I've not been a very good CEO for a couple of years now, I've not hired very good executives to work below me, my staff isn't nearly as good as it was, and overall, we're sinking. But I'm sorry and promise to do better..."

Do you think your company stock would have any value at all? Would investors keep buying your stock? How long do you even think your company would be around?

Dabo is the CEO of Clemson Sports. He's not about to "become humble enough to look inside himself and realize that his team has failed to meet expectations this year and admit his failures and build back better" at least to the public. It would be the worst thing he could possibly do for football, all Clemson sports, and for the university.

Would you?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There's a more nuanced way to do it than that . . .

Oct 24, 2023, 9:36 AM [ in reply to Not going to happen..... ]

You don't have to publicly announce that you suck and have generally underachieved, in full PR style. But coaches can and do say more muted, subtle things all the time about having to do this or that better as coaches.

I think you're understanding the critics as expecting something like that from Dabo when they're not. He doesn't need to grab a microphone and issue a massive, awkward mea culpa and bring down negative PR on the whole program and himself and his staff. But step one is not to routinely bristle and legitimate criticism. All the bashing of media and fans for what often is nothing more than noticing reality is entirely unwarranted. It's a propganda effort at stifling criticism rather than addressing it substantively. Harping on fans for not remembering how it was before he got here, recitations of his resume accomplishments, blame-shifting and distractive rhetorical comemnts "DJ doesn't field punts or play secondary!" weird and irrelevant whataboutisms "we're just a few plays away from such and such" All that is categorically unacceptable.

So, no, he doesn't need to plunge into self-flagellation or gratuitous public self-criticism with the same candor you might behind closed doors. But not flooding the zone with rhetorical smoke and mirrors would be a good start. There are subtle and respectable ways to say "yes, I need to re-evaluate this or that area." Heck, you can just deflect the question entirely and basically not answer - but weave false counter-narratives. We all can see and observe.

You raise good points. It seems 2 me Dabo has 2 goals: Win and keep the money coming in. When they win, the money flows - no problem. When they lose, he immediately goes into protective mode. Don't say anything that can be construed as a negative. And honestly, I don't believe this is his natural way of doing things. I believe there is a huge PR force behind him coaching him almost word for word what to say. Don't you find it weird that none of the coordinators are having press conferences this year? That keeps the company line intact. And the only player who's really conversing with the press is Cade and he sounds like a mini-Dabo. They're being spoon fed exactly what to say. Just like the CEOs of multi-million corporations. And btw, you rarely if ever hear a CEO apologize for the performance of their company.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree that

Oct 24, 2023, 10:15 AM

Cade, and players generally, often sound a bit like Dabo. I'm not sure if it's another PR force behind and above them, or if it's just Dabo's tendencies (and coach-speak) bleeding out into the players' mind and mindsets.

But again I think Dabo could be more candid without "apologizing." To quit the prevaricating and excuse making would be sufficient. No one needs him to fall on his sword, but poking level-headed critics as the enemy is a dishonest habit he has lately.

Re: I agree that

Oct 24, 2023, 10:37 AM

You're right about that for sure. All new territory I guess for him and the rest of the Clemson world. I hate the little comments like we're 3 or 4 plays from a top ranking....But we never hear them say they spent 5 hours on Sunday doing nothing but handing the ball off to try to stop the fumbling. Most of these things are not rocket science. Actions, to me, are much more important than what they say.

Re: Not going to happen.....

Oct 24, 2023, 10:48 AM [ in reply to Not going to happen..... ]

Well to be fair, it seems like multiple corporations are putting out terrible products that are tanking their revenue and stock prices yet they continue it to push their agendas and CEOs are still there leading the charge with no punishment whatsoever knowing they will be bailed out no matter what as long as they hold the line

So to your question, "how long can a company survive with falling stock prices and revenues?", the answer seems to be a very long times

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Successful CEOs dont let their companies slide like this.

They also have a plan of action in place to deal with setbacks and uncertainties. They do not keep doing what they were doing before, even if it worked well in the past. Instead, they adapt and innovate. I haven’t seen much of that from Dabo.

From C.S Lewis
“According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride. Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that, are mere flea bites in comparison: it was through Pride that the devil became the devil.”

Humility is the virtue in opposition to Pride. We’ve witnessed Dabo express humility through the years. It does seem we’ve reached a point where we’d really like to see him express more humility. Just my observation from afar. However, it’s not right for me to be his judge on this matter.

Re: Pride before the fall.

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” It means that a life of self-pride, putting yourself above all others, leads to destruction and acting all high and mighty towards others generally leads to your own downfall.

Dabo understands this, I hope. I know he is a Bible believing person.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We know that Dabo embraced the underdog role and used it to his advantage.

1

Oct 24, 2023, 11:32 AM

He did that in his own life, starting in childhood, and he also did it in coaching.

From “little ‘ol Clemson” to ROY bus, Dabo championed an us versus the world mentality. The players, coaches, and fans bought in and it worked wonders.

What I think Dabo failed to do is pivot effectively when we went from hunter to hunted. The strategy when you’re the favorite, the program that has everything, and the one everyone else wants to be like, is very different.

Sure, we’ve continued to have success. We still recruit top 5-10 classes every year. We won the ACC last year. But we haven’t had nearly the success recently that we had previously.

You can see Dabo trying desperately to recreate that underdog mentality, even though we have amazing facilities and great talent and Dabo gets paid 8 figures a year. You can hear it when he talks about media and fans being against us, dealing with adversity, etc. That doesn’t work like it used to.

Re: Pride before the fall.

There’s so many things wrong here.

First, the money definitely has not changed him.

He hasn’t changed at all. What has changed is his football team’s performance. I guarantee you Dabo has not strayed from anything he has done compared to 2016 and 2018.

Secondly, I guarantee you you are not the Christian that Dabo is. Man literally talks of God in front of national audiences, has devoted his entire life to that religion. Not just “claiming” so, but by exactly how he behaves every single day of his life.

I would go as far to say Dabo is the single most devoted Christian I have seen as far as the general public of normal people goes. Do not go there, thats just low. Don’t doubt his faith.

This is not about pride. It’s about doing things a certain way to prevent chaos and disaster.

Clemson is a program that holds values. Almost all football programs do not hold even similar values that Clemson football does. These values are commitment, faith, respect, etc.

These values have been there, and have also been emphasized by Dabo.

This is just what it is. This is why I do not see any drastic changes.
