Up in the boxes seeing the field and calling plays down? Honestly, don’t have a preference, because both have benefits and drawbacks.

No preference. I just like a defense that plays smart and

with aggression.

like the NFL did years ago, a coordinator up in the box would have a better view, and could relay the plays directly, without any of this sign stealing crap.

Personal choice.

Advantage of being in the box - you can see the entire field and understand better what the defense is doing.

Advantage of being on the field - you can get information from someone in the box, while also being able to look the QB, and the other players, in the eye and get a better sense of how they are reacting.

Same with defense.

Most DC's I can think of seem to prefer to be on the field. They want to "eyeball" and "motivate" the players up close and personal.

I haven't done a survey, but I'm thinking OC is about 50/50.

If the OC is also the QB coach, I think sideline makes sense. However, if they prefer to see all 22 from above then booth is fine. I think you need to consider background also. Goodwin never played football and he’s built his reputation from his talent helping from above. He’s not a huge rah-rah guy either. Someone with that background should be back in the booth. Venables is the counter example, with the right support in the booth, his presence from the sidelines is big for the players.

Interesting watching BV on the sidelines at Okie. Not a crazy man and is definitely giving his coordinators room to coach during the game.
