One thing that could fix our offense

10

Jan 12, 2023, 12:26 PM

Sticking to the run

In our two biggest losses:
Shipley averaged 5.3 yds on 12 carries vs ND
Mafah averaged 5.6 yds on 7 carries vs Tenn

And we lost the SCAR game when we took it out of Shipley's hands.

I think our OL could be decent in 2023. A strong running game could open up our struggling passing game.

Did you ever think, for a moment, that it wasn't Streeter's choice to start DJ? Then, when he had Cade as a starter, he was forced to start against a solid Tennessee team? Streeter would probably look much better, as would Clemson receivers, if Cade had started much earlier in the year and had time to learn the system and become more comfortable with the offense and game management as a whole. After I watched Streeter prepare Cole Stoudt for Oklahoma a few years ago, there is no doubt that he is a talented coach who is very dedicated to his alma mater.

Maybe I'm just overly optimistic, but I believe with a spring and summer under their belts, Cade and Streeter can move this offense forward and receiver play (and play calls) will improve with a QB who has the ability to hit a target downfield (something Streeter has not had the past two years). Mix that in with two talented running backs and we may have something. Go Tigers!

Streeter has failed at every job he's ever been in. To think he'd suddenly be brilliant with Cade is delusional. Tennessee was NOT solid at defense. They were a bottom 30 defense and the #127th passing defense. One fluke game from Cole Stoudt (against an Oklahoma defense that used to allow a billion points per game) and you're ready to ignore the fact that every QB we've had since then has regressed as passers, except for Deshaun, who refused to work with Streeter.

What are you smoking…he has in fact been successful in every job. D4 won a Natty his senior year, was a Heisman candidate, and a first round draft pick. Who said he refused to work with Streeter…. In actuality, they worked very well together. Do you like just making stuff up?
TL was also a Heisman candidate and a number one draft pick… The only one Clemson has ever had. Yeah sounds like Streeter really messed him up good. And let’s talk about DJ… He was a starter for two years… His second year statistics were significantly better than his first… I’m pretty sure that’s called progression. And if you don’t want to give him any coaching credit let’s talk about him as a recruiter. Name another QB coach at Clemson that has signed more four and five star quarterbacks in an eight year span. also, might as well throw in there that he was part of the staff that helped win to national championships… Again, no other QB coach in Clemson history can see that. But I’m sure all of this is just a fluke… And why talk about the facts….making blanket statements with nothing to back them up is much easier.

Agreed. If you're too stupid to realize that you shouldn't virtually abandon the run when you're averaging 5+ yards a carry, then you are way too stupid to keep up with the average college O.C.

It almost felt like go/no-go. Ahead, run. Behind, pass. Just ridiculously unbalanced and predictable. All year.

There's absolutely no doubt we FUNARED the coo game.

Jan 12, 2023, 1:07 PM

Should have run and run some more, but the one counterpoint is they did slow us down when they finally packed the box. That's why we had to throw the ball. I would however have liked to see more run game in one of our last 3 drives.

Otherwise, you stick with attacking an opponent's weakness. Didn't see any complaints when Cade ripped UNC, and the pass with QB run was moving us up and down the field against UT. All you need to do is look at the reduced yds/carry in the redzone against UT, then you'll see why we passed. We had 145 yards running the ball against UT - a lack of running is NOT why we lost to UT.

Perhaps uSC. Not ND and not UT.

Jan 12, 2023, 1:09 PM

You can make an argument against uSC, but ND squashed us regardless. You have to remember we got behind, and running was not the preferred option to try and get back in the game. We ran the ball for 145 yards against UT, and redzone failures against UT had nothing to do with not running the ball.

Re: One thing that could fix our offense

6

Jan 12, 2023, 12:36 PM

Having a quarterback, who
1. Is a threat to run himself,
2. Is a threat to complete intermediate in deep passes, will open up the running game substantially.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's so simple even coots can get it.

Jan 12, 2023, 12:59 PM

Weird how hard some people are trying to create their own narratives though.

There are zero good offenses that do great with a less than good/great QB. All offenses run through the QB. Nobody is lining up and just mashing anyone anymore. Need a high level passing game to succeed at the highest levels. Period.

The end.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The only thing that was wrong with our offense

Jan 12, 2023, 12:56 PM

was having a QB capable of running it. Looks like we have that now.

Nice try though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wouldn't go so far as to say that...

Jan 12, 2023, 1:43 PM

The limitations of the QB certainly wasn't the only problem with the Clemson offense.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

We weren't LSU circa 2019...

Jan 12, 2023, 1:51 PM

But again, everything runs through the QB.

I'm not sure what else you're referring to, but if you say WRs then you weren't watching the 2nd and 3rd levels during games. WRs, TEs, or a RB checkdown were there over and over again. The QB either lacked the vision or confidence to find them or throw and give them a chance. And then too, more often than not when we did throw more than 8 yds (and sometimes less) we had no idea where the ball was going.

Clearly the biggest issue in our lack of offensive explosiveness was tied to the struggles at the most important position on the field.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm no expert, but...

Jan 12, 2023, 2:03 PM

from my perspective, the offense appears scripted (predictable and generic) and doesn't exploit match-ups, it lacks much pre-snap movement or diagnosis, the QB rarely throws between the hashes, and the best skill position players on the field are often underutilized. I won't even get into the WR's and the OL.

The point is, there is plenty of blame to go around for the offensive struggles. It's not entirely on the QB.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

I doubt DJ could have handled additional levels of

Jan 12, 2023, 2:20 PM

complexity and decision making involved with those. They had to simplify everything so he could function.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I completely agree..

Jan 12, 2023, 2:50 PM

which is why I acknowledged the limitations of the QB. However, that wasn't the only issue.

I also fully acknowledge that it is incredibly difficult to change offensive philosophies during the season.

I'm hopeful some of the things mentioned will get addressed/corrected in the off season and we'll all see a more dynamic offense in 2023.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Yeah, some people have said that ("scripted")

Jan 12, 2023, 4:13 PM [ in reply to I'm no expert, but... ]

But I'm not sure where anyone gets that. We were significantly better on offense, even with having that issue at QB, and we won 11 games. We did so by adjusting to what we were capable of doing and doing what we needed to do to win those 11 games. Stick to a "######" regardless, and we don't win 11.

Now again, I will not argue the uSC game and neither would the coaches (in hindsight), but other than that you cannot make a claim that playcalling was a reason we lost the 2 other games.

The OL is as good as its ever been, save perhaps 2016, and we were significantly helped by a QB in DW who could avoid the rush and make things happen.

Cade appears to have that skill, save for the fact he's going to have to learn to step up in the pocket instead of taking off backwards for 30 yards. That, and maybe you didn't see my earlier post concerning WRs? In every single game, if you watched the 2nd and 3rd levels, there was nearly always one or more open, including TEs and RBs. The issue has been field vision and/or having the confidence to throw it, then when we did we never knew where it was going. The WRs immediately looked better when we changed QBs. Correct?

I have no clue what you're referring to as far as exploiting matchup. Sounds cool, but can you expand on that?

We did have pre-snap movement and motions, etc. Not sure why you missed it, but too, that's not the missing ingredient for a potent offense. The QB is THE KEY to success from the offense, not eye candy.

Who's been "underutilized"? We did a great job of spreading the play distribution around. For example, the TEs had more catches than any Dabo year ever, except for Jordan Leggett. Who else are you saying we didn't use?

We didn't rely on pre-snap diagnosis from the QB, well, because he wasn't good at it. But quite often we would stop and get changes from the sideline. Still had that nasty execution issue regardless.

Ok look, it wasn't 100% on the QB. Fine. How about 98%? Did you or did you not see an IMMEDIATE improvement in offense with the new QB, albeit he's still learning?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You sure can. Play calling in the SC game was terrible

Jan 12, 2023, 4:27 PM

We completely abandoned the run against a defense that ranked well outside the top 100 in run defense.

I am referring to using a lot of pre-snap motion to create mismatches based on how the defense lines-up and adjusts. We did it quite a bit under Morris, a bit less under TE and JS, and now we rarely do it.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

You can only stick with the run so long...

1

Jan 12, 2023, 1:00 PM

when the O-line doesn't block well enough. The fact Cade is a threat to pull the ball back and run around the end will definitely help loosen things up.

The OC polished the QB turd and we won

Jan 12, 2023, 1:44 PM

9 games with him. You're not seeing things clearly if you can't see the handcuffing the OC was under. There are no OCs who could've gotten more out of that issue.

When we had a good QB, we looked completely different on offense. We obviously destroyed UNC and of course we had almost 500 yards against UT. If you were to go back and look, you can directly attribute about 80% of the redzone issues to lack of execution of making bad decisions within the playcall.

So yeah, the OC has won 11 games this year, and he did so being entirely handcuffed at the most important position on the field. He's had an opportunity to coach a grand total of TWO games with a functional QB, and the offense looked COMPLETELY different and SIGNIFICANTLY better.

I'm looking much forward to what we can do with an off-season for the young QB to grow, and redevelopment of our offense around him.

This isn't rocket surgery my man.

Another thing is, if we would actually use the TE game properly in the pass game too. UGA relied alot of the running game mixed with the TEs, it's not like they had any stud WRs either. We have the talent at all positions, despite being thin at WR. Sticking to what actually works in each game is always the key. If they adjust...you adjust. We'll just have to see what changes going into next year, no doubt Streeter will still be the guy for at least another season.
