China may have just gotten knocked out of the AI race. Without ASML's lithography machines (basically fancy precise lasers) you can't even contemplate building the 10-nanometer-and-below-sized chips you need to construct high-end computers.

Credit where credit is due, it was the Biden administration that apparently leaned all over ASML to cut ties with China. Not crazy about a lot of Biden's moves, but this was absolutely the right one. China doesn't need to be anywhere near AI. Artificial intelligence is so incredibly potentially dangerous it makes nuclear weapons look almost precious in comparison.

At least. There's two main problems - they can't make anything even close to the ASML lithography machines, and high-end chips require the silicon be 99.9999999999 (I think that's 11 nines, anyway) percent pure or the chip won't function.

Only one place in the world can make silicon that pure...and it's in a mine in Spruce Pine, North Carolina...which is just a bit past Table Rock. That's it. That's the only place presently known on Earth.

So unless the Chinese find a source of their own super-pure silicon, they can't make the high-end chips either.

So the good news is, at least the Overmind that's going to go Skynet on us is going to be an American one.
