I keep reading that coaches simplified the gameplan for the OL last week and they had their best game.
My question, is what exactly does that mean? What all was changed and simplified? Also, why didn't we try this before the 8th game of the season, and when we had so many injuries?

Exactly!!!! And if we had 11 starters out and played that well against a good ND team than who is evaluating the talent and starters!!!

We didn't pull or play zone. More straight line hat on hat. Question of the day... we reverted back to our old scheme that Austin played in and Caldwell liked. Obviously we change, or should, depending on opponents.
Exactly why I predicted we'd win. I also said we should feature more quick slants. ND if you watched their films

Oops, meant to add because ND linebackers are average and not that good in coverage. But they've got some studs at CB. Probably why we didn't take many deep shots.

try it earlier in the season. There was definitely a big change in the production.

You're correct - no zone blocking - just straight ahead and we blew the ND D-front off the ball. Now, I want to see us go back in the time machine and use drive blocking. If we had drive blocked, we would habe blown ND 15 yds off the LOS on every run play.....

It would be helpful if we got the PFF grades for the O line this week. BrandonRink® can you post those?

One example was you didn’t see play where guard and tackle both pull to the opposite side. Actually there was a bit of zone blocking but ND D line does a lot of straight man to man, which made it a bit easier on pass blocking.

Zone blocking. It really confused ND they weren't expecting that after watching film.

Yeah I misspoke above. I was trying to say we didn't play much zone. Thanks for updating.

Football players and coaches recognize zone blocking, but it is difficult for fans to distinguish between zone and man blocking when viewing from the stands. Linemen are still firing out and hitting D-linemen or linebackers. Without know for sure, it looked like we were running the stretch play a lot with Mafah and stretch plays are zone blocking. Honestly I think Shipley would fare better if we ran more zone with him. Hitting an assigned hole when there is not a hole there doesn't seem to work too well.
Whatever we were running against Miami in the last quarter ...... stop running it.

It would have been nice to switch earlier, if true.

We had 289 yards of offense. About 125 yards less than our average.

Mafahs patience and his jump step was providing extra yards. Haven’t seen that jump cut from him previously. The OL did ok, but Mafah created yards all day.
If Shipley is able to corral his patience like Phil did, he’ll get over 100 yards on Saturday. Shipley will start, and he’s earned that over time.

A word of caution. If Notre Dame prepared for the regular blocking scheme and/or players, the result may not be as good going forward, now that opponents can prepare in advance.

A simplified plan is usually zone blocking and it leaves holes when 2 men go to 1 gap. It does not pick up delayed blitzes well at all.

Based on what I've read about zone blocking it seems like an opportunity to confuse yourself.
