And a truly broken offense. I even miss 2012-14 when it was the opposite

11-13 is fair, in 14 our offense was absolutely terrible with stoudt starting most of the year.
We beat Louisville without and offensive touchdown. Was much worse than what is today imo.

I attended the Syracuse great that year and expected the Tigers to blow the Orange away. Well, how about 14-6, Clemson. A rather dull affair. Great Tiger defense and the offense was almost invisible.

You had Nuke and Sammy on that team. Boyd was a good college QB. No playmakers anywhere besides Brown on this one. I’d be searching far and wide for all skill positions from anywhere we can get them.

As of today, defensively, we’re:
#9 in total defense #14 in first down defense #40 in 3rd down conversion % (defense) #44 in 4th down conversion % (defense) #7 in defensive TDs #119 in kickoff return defense #56 in punt return defense #8 in fumbles recovered #49 in passes intercepted #22 in passing yds allowed #44 in red zone defense #11 in rushing defense #40 in scoring defense #10 in passing efficiency defense #67 in team sacks #21 in tackles for loss #18 in turnovers gained
Elite-“ish” is one way to describe it.

Here are the cliff notes - truly elite defenses aren’t:
#40 in 3rd down conversion % (defense) #44 in 4th down conversion % (defense) #119 in kickoff return defense #56 in punt return defense #49 in passes intercepted #22 in passing yds allowed #44 in red zone defense #40 in scoring defense #67 in team sacks #21 in tackles for loss
Hope that clears it up.

Not really

For starters, you listed a couple of special teams stats.
Scoring defense is stupid because it doesn't even remove non-offensive points scored by opponents.
Do we really care about being #49 in interceptions 6 games in? Were our elite defenses higher than that every year? I doubt it. Turnovers can be quite random.
Honestly, most of these stats are trash compared to newer advanced metrics anyway, and when you look at those this D has been very good. Coming into this game it was rated #11 in SP+, #4 in FPI, and #3 in FEI. I doubt today's performance hurt those rankings at all.
I feel like you are just nitpicking small details and ignoring the overall picture. Very few defenses are rated really highly in every single category.

Do you think our defense would look “elite” against any of the top-10 teams? Be honest. Would you bet the house on our current defense against the likes of Georgia, Michigan, Texas? We aren’t elite. We pretty good, against average or worse teams. Our D can and will hang against ND and Miami, as we did against FSU. But their defenses are going to make our offense look pop warner. It’s unfortunate but true. We barely got out of another one today, against a team that got dragged by Georgia Tech. We allowed 85 yards on read-draw plays today. My glasses are orange too… but elite, we aren’t.

FSU is currently a top 5 team and our defense held them in check for most of the game. FSU had 22 rushing yards. Clemson’s defense is solid. Your SC coot’s defense is trash

But he's right. The defense is really good but it ain't elite. No way.

It’s odd that you say that scoring defense is stupid and that a lot of these metrics are trash.
That Clemson defense in 2018 led the country in scoring defense (13.1 points per game) for the first time in school history. Ranked fourth in rushing defense (96.3 yards per game), fifth in total defense (285.9 yards per game). They also set a school record and led the nation with 54 sacks, (the third-most by any FBS team in a season since 2000), AND tackles for loss (136). That was an elite defense. The best college football has ever seen in fact. And it’s our benchmark to weigh against.
It’s odd that our best defense ever was ranked higher in almost every trash metric than our current defense is, especially since none of them mean anything.
