I believe you are correct. There is an expression, “a sop for Cerberus,” meaning a gesture to appease an aggrieved party. In its original context, the “sop” was a piece of food — usually bread — thrown to the beast Cerberus to divert him from possibly devouring you. nowadays, it’s Generally shortened to just “sop.”
