Cheez-It Bowl is not the Citrus Bowl

Dec 7, 2021, 12:36 PM

I've seen various articles on several sites stating this is our 4th time in this bowl along with 1988 (Penn St), 1989(Oklahoma), and 1992(Cal). Those years we played in the Citrus Bowl that was and is still played on New Years Day. Auburn is playing Northwestern in this years Citrus Bowl(tie-ins killed the Citrus this year).

This is actually our 4th time in what was once the Tangerine Bowl. 2002(Texas Tech), 2005(Colorado), 2014(Oklahoma), and of course this year V/S Iowa State.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

No...it's not. It's the former Russell Athletic Bowl

Also formerly know as the Blockbuster, Carquest, and Micron PC Bowl.

Two completely different bowl games played at the same stadium.

The old Tangerine Bowl became the Citrus Bowl.

Yes the Citrus Bowl was the old Tangerine Bowl. The Cheez-It Bowl was briefly the "new" Tangerine Bowl that started in Miami as the old Blockbuster Bowl then eventually relocated to Orlando. See the link below.

I know it's confusing but we're not playing in the same Bowl that Danny beat PSU and Oklahoma.

BigCUFan, here's the one you're referring to so yes you're correct in that it was the original Tangerine.

Yep. Then after Micron PC it was the Mazda, Champs Sports, Russell-Athletic and Camping World Bowls.

The bowl was founded in 1990 by Raycom and was originally played at Joe Robbie Stadium outside the city of Miami. It was formed under the name Sunshine Football Classic, but due to corporate title sponsorships, was never actually contested under this name, nor even referred to as such except during brief intervals between corporate sponsors. During its Miami existence, it successively went by the names Blockbuster Bowl (three editions), CarQuest Bowl (five editions), and the MicronPC Bowl (three editions).

In 2001, the bowl changed hands, and was relocated to Orlando. The bowl was known as the Tangerine Bowl, a historical moniker that was the original title of the game now known as the Citrus Bowl, for three games. Foot Locker, the parent company of Champs Sports, purchased naming rights in 2004, naming it the Champs Sports Bowl, under which eight games were played. In early 2012, naming rights were agreed to by Russell Athletic; five games were played as the Russell Athletic Bowl. In early 2017, Camping World signed an agreement to be the title sponsor of the game through 2019; three editions were staged as the Camping World Bowl, concluding with the 30th playing of the bowl. In May 2020, Cheez-It signed on as the new title sponsor of the game in a multi-year agreement

Let's just leave that 2002 Texas Tech matchup out of it,

if at all possible. We didn't really MATCH UP at all in that one. I bet Charlie Whitehurst is still sore from all the hits he took.

And, Kliff Kingsbury looked like NFL talent at QB that day, to the tune of 55-14.

MUCH worse actual beating than the 70-33 Orange Bowl vs West Virginia that people consider a "beatdown".
