NIL, OPT OUT, and TRANSFER PORTAL

Tigerclaws2 raised the question of what to do about players opting out. I addressed it in my comments but thought my opinion would be worth sharing in the main board forum. In my opinion, NIL, Opting Out, and the Transfer Portal all run hand in hand. First, I will address the opt out. If a player opts out for the NFL draft and does not participate in post season games, then you send that player a bill for the cost of their education. This should be included in the scholarship contract details. The player takes the risk of not being drafted and owing a large debt to the school. It would deter players from doing this.

Transfer portal is another issue I would address. A player should only be able to transfer as a starter or 2nd string player if his recruiting coach is fired from the program or if the player has an immediate family member who is terminally ill and the player desires to transfer to a closer school. 3rd string players should be allowed to transfer but waive a year of eligibility after their first transfer should they decide to transfer again.

NIL should only be available to players who decide to return as a starter for their senior year. A prime example would be Xavier Thomas. This establishes an incentive for players to complete their education and earn a degree. The NIL offer can only be presented by a source connected to the player’s current school. In other words, outside schools cannot lure a player away from his current school with NIL money. Doing it this way also prevents NIL money from going to waste in a player like DJU who ends up being a bust.

NIL sponsorship funding should be used to pay a stipend to ALL players who participate in sports at the collegiate level. This marks a requirement for a minimum investment to the school in order to become a NIL sponsor.

If the NCAA incorporates the above it settles things back down, puts the needs and welfare of the players first, and protects coaches and players alike from tampering.

Again, just my opinion for what it's worth. All decisions are rendered at a level way above my pay grade.

GO TIGERS!

Our country won't go on forever, if we stay soft as we are now. There won't be any America because some foreign soldiery will invade us and take our women and breed a hardier race.

Chesty, +1! I like your ideas a whole lot better than what now is in place. I think your suggestions certain would h we play. Getting the genie back in the bottle won’t be easy, but this needs to be fixed.

Could be as simple as "no NIL contact" before enrolling and a no postseason penalty for violations, going back to one year wait for transfers to play, and no blanket offers for NIL to players from private boosters with nothing to gain from the players(such as using their names in advertisements) except to get(keep) them on the team.

Problem is, none of your suggestions is enforceable...

for either legal or competitive reasons. Pure fantasy.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be good for some of them to happen, but let's deal with reality.

.... an organization with a different form of government, including a commissioner, then something along the lines of your suggestions will be implemented.

Right now, there is no one who can implement the changes, all reasonable, that you propose.

As it is now, the contract is between the collective or a private company and the player. The school cannot tell a student he has to repay the school the cost of education because the kid dropped out of school.
