'Romney is a sexist, racist, xenophobe' media narrative influenced enough votes to make a difference? From what I recall, the media was pretty brutal towards him in that race. Almost equivalent to the hate Trump got.

He lost 332 to 206 and a difference of 5 million votes. By Electoral College standards, it was a bigger loss than Biden vs. Trump.
It wasn't considered a close race.

The thing that Romney got hit for was his tenure at Bain Capital as far as raiding companies ala Gordon Gecko and for laying off workers.
