Mafah being tackled when ND grabbed his arm strap should be illegal

I'm sure most people that saw the game remember a tackle on Mafah by having his arm strap grabbed and spun him around. I don't recall ever seeing a player tackled this way but it looked as dangerous as tackling by grabbing a facemask.
Grabbing a jersey is fine but grabbing authorized equipment should be penalized.

It’s the same as the hair thing - if you have long hair, it’s considered part of the uniform and is fair game for tackling.

I had heard that hair thing in years past, but I didn't know that was still the case. No way it should be legal to grab hair but not someone's shoulder pads behind their neck. If the rule is aimed at safety then that's not consistent. You could just as easily get slammed down on the back of your head by a hair pulling as you could be a horse collar.
As an aside, I think the horse collar rule gets abused by the officials. Grabbing someone by behind the neck and pulling them down flat on their back/head is one thing, but it seems sometimes even if a defender merely initially subdues them by grabbing them by that area, but then actually pulls them to the ground by other means . . . they still call it - even though the dangerous slam hasn't occurred.

It shouldn't be called (your example)

Grabbing the pads from the back is, in itself, not illegal. It's only a penalty if you pull them down from behind using the pad. And that rule came into place after a bunch of knee/leg injuries where offensive players were rolled up by a defender.
But, you're right, it seems that at game speed and grabbing of the pads is flagged.

I think it's a good rule. I just wish the officials were a bit more discerning.
I read some years back that officials are actually **taught,** (i.e. in their official training) to look for various "red flags" or touchstone/indicators of infractions as a method of detecting said infractions. For example, some years back it seemed like a DB merely "putting" his hand on receivers back, even if there was not push, pull, tug, etc. (but merely "laying it on") started to be called, with frequency, as PI . . . and sort of out of nowhere. There was a big uptick in this whereas good officiating discernment had ignored that kind of incidental minutia for decades prior. That uptick was b/c officials were told in their training to "look" for that.
I have no problem with certain red flags being identified as "general" indicators that officials should notice when assessing a possible infraction . . . but somewhere along the way they started taking certain "general" indicators and treating them as categorical infractions. Lame.

It ain't a facemask or a horsecollar which are both rules for safety.

It looked bad, but I don't have a problem with it. I don't think there is an increased injury risk to the runner. More likely to break the tackler's fingers.

I'll guarantee you, there won't be an exposed strap from his shoulder pads next Saturday.

Yea need to wrap that thing up. I have no problem with grabbing anything you can get your hands on as long as it’s not the mask or collar.

it is a harness for a shoulder injury, the "strap" ties back to his pads from the armband. I swear Boulware had one on the entire time he was here.

And Bresee and Tyler Davis and a safety I can’t remember on and on and on. Half our team is held together with duct tape.

It was a brace for his shoulder. He most likely had a separation or dislocation. It connects around his bicep. If he's wearing the brace it will be exposed.

Horse collar tackle penalty does not apply if

… the tackle is made inside the tackle box.
FYI.
If it becomes illegal to tackle someone by their hair, then all offensive skill players should grow 4 foot long locks that drape down their backs. Hair braids that get in the way of the player’s waist.
Some hair gets caught up in the defenders hands when making the tackle = 15 yard penalty tacked in at the end of the run + automatic first down.

At the game on Saturday I was like woah thats not illegal

But after watching the game on tv, I don’t see anything wrong with it. Mafah shouldn’t have had the strap exposed. Now I’ve never played football past high school so I’m not saying it didn’t slip out or something.
Heckuva day from Mafah! He’s special!
