Let's Move On From Criticizing Dabo About The Transfer Portal

I note David Hood's latest article still criticizing Dabo about the transfer portal. It states that Florida State and Georgia keep getting better because of using it. In my opinion, Florida State is currently crashing and burning because of the portal. They are not getting better! Some 22 players have transferred out via the portal after this season. If players transfer in through it they have little interest in loyalty to the program as such, and no issues with leaving later. Recruited players think the same, no reason to be loyal as portal transfers are rapidly coming in.

Georgia's success is clearly because of extremely successful recruiting over a number of recent years.

Clemson in comparison had 10 players transferring out, largely because Dabo has recruited great players who are challenging their playing time. We have no scholarships to give. Let's let Dabo continue to choose players who fit our culture.

We got the best head football coach in the nation. College sports has become too much about the money from the schools tv networks and the players themselves. Trophies are won by the school that spends the most money buying their mercenaries. Is it more important to get a trophy this way or to develop young men to become meaningful members of the community while giving them a chance at the NFL? How you answer this says a lot about you as a person.

FSU won't have a 6th year QB leader next season to help instill that sense of team from among the players. Transfer DJU can't fill that role in that regard considering he is one of the new guys coming in. I don't see a collapse but 3-4 losses is probably how that goes down. Then it looks like they'll have to go do that all over again.

Dabo is in this to win games as well as win his way. It will be interesting to see how he adapts to playing what so many T-netters perceive as a team beneath Clemson's high character standards in Game 1 in eight months. If Dabo stays true to past form, he will start and play primarily upperclassmen. If the game gets ugly he will take his lumps, congratulate UGA, and move on to starting more skilled underclassmen earlier in the season than is normal.

That said, I like the 2024 team to show improvement over 2023 with a potential Top 10 finish if the o-line materializes, the team stays healthy, and player leadership emerges.

we have no spots b/c Dabo doesn't "earmark/plan" for the portal........

There's a reason we've been in the top for freshman snaps the last few seasons. Because we'll continue to be forever young and the results the last 3-4 years on the field not only illustrate the youth that we're forced to play but also the talent drop off that we've had since the 2015-2019 days. If you can't see it........I can't help ya.

We're losing ~33-40% of our "recruited HS players" EVERY SINGLE YEAR (the last 5-6 yrs).......and replacing those with HS freshman EVERY SINGLE YEAR, it's a cycle that needs to be broken by Dabo..........BUT HE WON'T

Why should he? He has 11.5 million reasons not to. He will make his moral statement and get paid more than anymore else to do it. This is the trade off for the run…

You may be on to something with freshman snaps

Of the top ten programs with the most freshman snaps in 2023, which includes Clemson, UGA, and Alabama, only Alabama made the playoffs. Conclusion, playing more freshman is an indicator you are not going to be successful.

Right. Lol.

Unfortunately, this will continued to be debated unless Dabo returns us to the playoffs and (competes in the playoffs) otherwise this will continue to be debated each and every year as long as Coach Swinney refuses to use the portal.
(I know some here will hate that I use the word “refused” but essentially it’s true.)

even during those playoff and NC years people were crying about Dabo and his decisions.

If the Clemson University football teams doesn't beat every team by 50 then some 1 will make their way to tnet and b#tch and whine about how Dabo is ruining their life . Heck some 1 would probably still cry on Tnet about how Dabo is a mean coach for beating every 1 by 50 and not showing good sportsmanship.

Some peopel are just half empty folks. That isn't essentially true.. it is 100% true

I completely agree. FSU experience is exemplary of the portal pitfall. With all the “talent” that Norvell portalled into his program, they were NOTHING without the veteran QB who, though also a transfer as a redshirt freshman, had been in the program for 4 years and developed his skills there at FSU, so not really a mercenary like so many of his mates.

Examine also the Coach Prime/Colorado experience: flash in the pan, overhyped in preseason and old news by week 3.

Yeah I want summa that…not!

I agree. FSU is about to implode with the NCAA Restrictions at hand, and the lawsuit with the ACC. Nobody wants Florida State in their conferences(SEC, Big 10) and Coach Corvell got lucky with the portal for one season. The DJU project won't end up like Jordan Travis did at QB, and this crazy, desperate approach by Corvell in thinking he can shortcut his way to a National Title is misguided. Other programs are doing the same thing in a "free-agency" type frenzy. Dabo needs to stick to his horses because this abnormal fad will eventually lose it's appeal, and the art of building a culture will stay.

I disagree. The portal has bought incredible parity in college football. Teams that were terrible have instantly become competitive. Georgia has used the portal quite well to build their roster. Maybe go look at the players they’ve added through this run. Some defensive studs for sure.

I must clarify, I am NOT a fan of what NIL and the portal have done to college football. It has broken the traditional team building blueprint. It’s sickening. However, we need to evolve when the rules change. It’s like having a specialty tool that makes repairing your car much easier. Yet, we continue to use the good old hammer and butter knife to try to get the same results. We’re kinda falling behind. It was happening to Saban as well. He hasn’t won a Natty in a minute. We haven’t sniffed one in a minute.

So I guess what you are saying is we accept current results and continue being a young team each year because a lot of our depth decides to transfer every year? Ok.

I don’t want us to go down the road some of these teams have and rely heavily on the portal but not using it to fill gaps is hurting us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FSU is a horrible example to hold up in front of everyone.

#1 Even in a down year for our program we should’ve beaten them. They were lucky to walk out of DV with a win.

#2 They weren’t that good and minus Jordan Travis they were mediocre at best. (See UF and UL games)

#3 The worst bowl loss in history showed everyone just how vulnerable the foundation of their program is.

As nice as it might be to fill some holes on our roster with transfer Dabo has stated that we are a developmental program. He’s not looking for one and dones. The man has won enough to do it the way he sees fit.
