Any of you boys dethatch yer lawn? If so, what do you use?

Feb 21, 2022, 3:32 PM

Can I just pay the man?

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

what kind of grass?

Feb 21, 2022, 3:34 PM

Give how to with doc a listen on the YouTubes. He's got some pretty good mooda grass vids that can be used for zoisa too.

He convinced me not to dethatch, fwiw

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is just grass. It had a few spots last year

Feb 21, 2022, 3:50 PM

that never got new live grass. My efforts with a rake didn't help.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're going to rip up a lot of what's already there

Feb 21, 2022, 3:51 PM

dethatching, probably would be better off aerating with a plug aerator. I'd try to wait until the grass is actively growing though.

I sure doesn't read like you do.

Feb 21, 2022, 4:07 PM

I wouldn't even consider dethatching.

Please forgive me, @IneligibleUser

Now this is news I can use.

Feb 21, 2022, 4:16 PM

But yeah, I've no idea what kind of grass and I feel like there are at least 3 distinct types in various places.

As a few others have mentioned it would be more beneficial to aerate, Unless you have zoysia. When you aerate you are basically breaking up the thatch layer anyway while also breaking up compaction and allowing gas exchange to happen with the roots. The best time to do this is late May while the grass is actively growing. Core aeration does a lot of good it also damages the plant some by slicing the roots and the crown of the plant. The plant will heal a lot faster when we are in the growing season. Hope that helps

The moles are doing ahelluva job keeping my centipede airraided. Maybe I need to double the dose of the grubbacide.

Re: The aeriation part

Feb 21, 2022, 8:04 PM

They def do a good job of that. Look for a product called Aloft or acelepryn both will give you all year control of the moles food source which will send them to the neighbors.

Well, I can’t see my lawn.

Feb 21, 2022, 4:08 PM

It’s covered in snow. So give me like 60 days and then we can worry about this and fertilizing

Have seen people do it, but I never saw the need....

Feb 21, 2022, 4:10 PM

a good mulching blade keeps the clippings small, even if you don't have a bagger. Now, I've always had fescue, so every fall when I aerate/overseed/fertilize/lime... I'm going to rip the yard up good with that core aerator anyway. Just never had a thatch problem, but I'm sure other grass varieties in different climates are probably different...

do people burn their yards any more?

Feb 21, 2022, 4:29 PM

that's how my dad, granddad, etc got rid of thatch. We used to have big old Saturday "burn parties" when I was growing up, the local neighbors would come over to help. Station folks around with rakes to put out the frisky offshoots before they got out of control. Then we'd go to the next person's house to light their yard up.

I never have done it myself though. I don't think the govt overlords even permit stuff like this any more.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Now that is my kind of yard work.

I remember those days with my grandads burning off the yards. Good memories but it's probably strictly forbidden in most places now. Anyhow, it sure was something I looked forward to as a kid!

Feb 22, 2022, 8:31 AM

I have a mixed green yard. Some Bermuda, bahia (highway grass), some zoyzia, some fescue, some monkey grass, some clover, and some centipede. Half of my yard used to be pasture land. No dethatching for me, just cut it and kill fire-ant hills. That's about all I do.
