Is it still not safe to eat fish from Lake Hartwell?

2

I know years ago when we lived there it was not allowed. Saw that post about the fancy boat and got me wondering. Why was you not supposed to?

It has always been safe on my side (Tugaloo River) which has the purest water in the world. The other branch (Seneca) is much safer than what you buy in any store.

No it has not. Stripers and Hybrids swim the entire lake. They are the worst carriers of PCB.

In some parts of the state, mercury levels have been a concern. DHEC advises only small portions of certain fish should be consumed. Bass is one of them. Don't know if that is the case in the upstate.

Some like the OP delight in spreading false narratives. I have eaten fish from there weekly for over 20 years (and am very healthy). I have never read of even one person harmed in any way from eating fish from Hartwell.
So called scientist (people feeding at the $$ troughs of government grants) put out silly stats to justify more of my tax $$. Idiots read and repeat that crap.

If they wear white lab coats, especially when interviewed on TV, you better believe them. Because they have a white lab coat on.

Nice! My grandparents lived to be like 90. My grandfather feed the family with fish he caught from tbe seneca river basin of hartwell. For the love.... eat tbe fish if it makes you happy. Rivers has a constant flow of fresh water. You'll be fine. People in tbe Cateechee mill village sued tbe state and won millions. Tbe first thing they did was install in ground pools and use water from this same river to fill it.

Square D. They used flame retardant fluids in transformers as a cooling liquid made with PCBs. PCBs were washed into Hartwell at high levels and its known to be highly carcinogenic. As the lake aged the PCBs began to get trapped in the sediment and the levels found in fish decreased except for species like catfish and carp that tended to use the bottom for feeding. Late 90s or early 2000s, DHEC removed all fish species from consumption except catfish or fish over certain measurements that were older and allowed for accumulation of PCBs.

That said, I used to eat bass and white bass from Hartwell couple times a month when I was in college 88-93. I just kept the smaller ones as I had studied the PCB case in an environmental class. Although I was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic melanoma in 2010, pretty sure that wasnt from PCBs??

As a DHEC retiree, they have the lab work to back it up. Same is true for Oscar fish in Florida. Eat a minimal amount. Mercury in our waters is believed to be linked to the Industrial Revolution when no air quality tests were done. The mercury and other chemicals were deposited in the Southern states from air currents. Mercury build up results when larger fish consume smaller fish and both have mercury in their systems. Naturally the build up increases as the larger fish feed. You may not notice it immediately but the long term can cause some health concerns, mental issues.

Oh good, a poster-child for survivorship bias. I'm happy you're healthy; wouldn't wish ill on anybody.

But it is a known fact that PCBs were dumped into the river for decades. It is also a known fact that chronic PCB consumption can have ill effects on respiratory systems, skin, and even cause negative neuropsychological effects.

Are you likely to see acute effects from eating a large mouth bass out of the contaminated part of the lake? No. Would I want to push my luck and eat one of those fish every day for dinner for years? Nope! But you do you.

I love how people are perfectly happy to use science and technology when convenient to them (for instance, using their phones to post on here, or going to a hospital when sick, etc). But when somebody with just as much training says something they don't like, all of a sudden it's "government interference" or some such #########.

My conclusion after reading this thread:

To eat, or not to eat? "That is the question—Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And, by opposing, end them?”
