Is a natty worth it to you if it's from buying guys who are essentially ringers

who play for a year or two with no commitment to the school and who only want to win a natty and make a lot of money?

I think I'd rather have a cohesive team of recruits that chose Clemson for the university, the atmosphere, the history, the player development, the coaching staff, maybe even the academics, than players who come and go every year looking to maximize their marketability. No - correction - I WOULD rather have that than a natty purchased with high-priced, high-profile transfers who just want the money.

I always go back to that moment in 2016 when Boulware talked about all the teams and players that preceded that group and laid the foundation. He knew and loved Clemson. That's the kind of player I want to represent Clemson, even if it lowers our chances at a natty. That was a classic Clemson moment if there ever was one.

But that's just me.

i've not seen a national championship won via transfer portal

even Joe Burrow was with LSU through a rough first year.

UofM tried for 3 seasons with the same squad. they finally got it and it took forever and took playing a pretty soft Pac12 team.

People and times change. A wholly HS developmental college program will have some ups and downs due to recruiting and player development. I have accepted Clemson as a non-elite football program. 7-10 wins will be the norm now. The players are getting paid, so why not go into the portal. The problem is getting and paying the money to transfers, but at what price to existing players? The paradox here is colleges committed to four degrees but not the players. The transfer portal is a way to change the roster. A lot of non-contributing players with degrees is a recruiting failure. Ivy league schools and military academies do not pay HC and assistants $10M a year, but have high graduation rates. I want a balance between education and athletics which likely means less winning which I accept.

I have no issue with NIL, etc

As far as Clemson not winning mythical national championships because they don’t go full crazy NIL, I’m cool with that. The national championships in my lifetime do me good rest of my life.

Selfishly I’m fine not winning any more whilst I lives :)

What does this post even mean?

Were players like Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawerence not “ringers”?

Did they not go to Clemson to win a National championship?

Did they not bolt to the NFL as soon as they were eligible?

Athletes do not have to make a commitment to the school just to the sport they play. Accept today or live in yesterday's world.

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

I agree , I could care less about a purchased championship. Who ever wants to spend the most in NIL and Transfers can buy a championship trophy within in a couple of years .
It’s like beating your chest in the mirror , worthless .

But it's ok to spend 10 million on a coach?

Are we not "paying" to win?

You could look at the $10 million as earned rather that Clemson paying $10 million then waiting for a natty to materialize. I have no problem with any HC salary. How would you negotiate your contract if your boss was being pressured by people outside profession to fire you? I imagine we would want that parachute.

Dabo is pretty well committed to Clemson University

A transfer is committed only to one season, if that.

I'm not knocking transfers in general. It's a necessary thing sometimes. I'm talking about the possibility of piecing together a championship team, kind of like the way one-and-done goes in college basketball now. I'd rather have an organic, grown national championship team than one that was pieced together just to win a natty, and basically kicking aside the kids that committed to the team out of high school.

I agree that he is committed. He actually knows what that word means. Unlike some of these guys. Where they're committed to the highest bidder. I believe the "organic, grown national championship team' has something you can't go out an buy. And that is trust in the guy beside you, trust in the leaders on the field and most important, trust in the coaches.

As long as we play by the rules and do what our peers (BAMA, etc..) are doing, then I have no problem.

SERIOUS QUESTION: You think we got Wesco and Moore w/o guarantees?

Paying players isn't a new phenomenon.

I had a friend who worked as a manager on the FB staff when he was at CLEM in the early 90s. No bigger Tiger fan growing up than him. Me and him would brag who got Jerry Butler/Steve Fullers wrist band after games, etc..... He still loves the Tigers, but what he saw/learned during his time on the team tainted his ideal of what the program was. I won't go into it, buts its not too dissimilar to what is now going on in full view.

The players who won us NC in 2016/2018 are no different than the kids you describe. Dabo has done a MASTERFUL job getting as close to the ideal as possible. But the changes you have seen, and more to come, are an acknowledgment that we can't keep doing things the EXACT same way. Tweaks are needed--just like anything else in life, you adapt, improve. grow. Clemson, as an institution, is NOT going back to the way things used to be...and thats a good thing.

Though I do not like the current state of college football and love the Clemson culture I would be okay with 2-3 transfers per year if they could help us win a NC. This coming year for example if we brought in 1 OL and 1 DE that could help us win it I would be estatic.

...and KC..that's all we need to do ATM.

85 is already a low number. You handicap yourself by not using it. We only need it sparingly.

We only decided to TRULY use it last year. We will get better at it....

I'm sure more will try it. Some may succeed. Most will fail. I just don't want Clemson to fall into that category like TA&M.

I wouldn’t mind a couple of 1-2 year players to shore up areas of need. However, it must be done within the framework of the rules…..no tampering.
