I'm learning that Clemson and FSU are the two programs

that have been killing talk of no divisions in football, as they want to continue playing each other every year but not potentially a 2nd time in an ACCCG, which could potentially knock one or the other out of a CFP or NY6 bowl, though such a match-up would have happened only once in the game's history.

The ACC created these divisions and crossover games in part to set up better ACCCG's, though in large part that's failed. Going to 9 league games while keeping divisions intact is simply doubling down on a failed strategy, in addition to creating even more opportunities for re-matches in general with the extra crossover game.

Personally, I'm much more interested in having the extra Power 5 OOC game that we schedule now over 9 ACC games, but the league is absolutely headed to the 9+1 model in October unless something drastically changes, like Clemson and FSU agreeing to ditch divisions, which would allow 8 league games to continue without quite the additional +2 Power 5 mandate that ESPN is pushing today.

Would it be worth ditching an annual with FSU and instead playing them 2x every four years, in equal rotation with Miami, and settling with Louisville as an annual instead?

9+1 is a worst case scenario alternative, but the status quo is no longer, so something's got to give.

I too dislike the 9 game ACC idea . However , I am not certain it is the done deal that a bunch of people are saying it is .

I'm in favor of things that help Clemson football , and I'm not certain an extra crossover game is any help .

Especially since Clemson, FSU, Louisville, and Georgia Tech - who represent virtually all of the football glory the ACC has achieved over the last 10 years or so - are going to be adamantly against it. All of us have permanent SEC rivals.

Do we really care that Syracuse or Wake Forest are telling us to play 9 games? Sorry, all votes in the ACC are not equal. If they annoy Clemson and FSU too much, we'll pull out - or start voting them off the island - and I suspect they know that.

Personally I want to see FSU moved to the coastal division and become our cross rival. Lose Ga. Tech as an annual game and put Va. Tech into the FSU slot in our division. This would balance the divisions and still allow rivalry games. Clemson and FSU need seven home contests while playing their SEC foes as rivals. Unless the ACC wants several ticked off schools I would recommend the 8-2 model with a five year scheduling compromise involving other ACC schools while the ESPN contract begins in full in 2019.

Unfortunately that is exactly the situation that our ADs are

trying to prevent - playing annually during the season then playing again in the ACCCG. That's why they're against scrapping divisions. I'd like to see that resistance change.

ACC bylaws say different, and we have to face this.

Plus we all just committed to hanging together for the next 20 years through the GOR.

The vote was tabled until October by the 8+2 crowd because they were going to lose last Friday, not by much, but by enough. Got this from a pretty reliable source.

Nobody is thrilled with either scenario, even the status quo - but it's coming down to having to choose between what we've decided to put on the table. Scrapping divisions, which would save having to go to 9 as it would not require as much additional Power 5 scheduling and would improve league inventory, is being handcuffed by our admin and FSU for the reason stated in the OP.

The danger to me is that we shouldn't ditch a known for an unknown. We are building one of the modern epic rivalries. When my younger self signed up for this site in 1998, he put 'Following FSU, hating UF' as his hobby. But I think we may actually both someday replace our historic rivals with each other as our most important opponent. Lets don't mess that up.

imo, it is the best current matchup in football

Aug 18, 2016, 4:46 PM

there is no reason to screw with it. and this yr it determines a ton. its a pay per view matchup in what i believe is the 2 best teams in nation. bama/lsu and ohio st/mich fail in comparison - year in, year out

I for one am glad you are stopping. You are one of the most ignorant posters ever. You obviously think very highly of your own opinion, unlike the rest of us - RockHillTiger

No doubt this has become an epic series - heck, even

when one or the other has been struggling it's still been the best league game of the season. I'm certainly not advocating to ditch it as an annual game, but what I want the admins of each school to do is stop worrying about meeting for a 2nd time in the ACCCG later that season should each earn their way there, which is what they don't want, thus why scrapping divisions isn't an option, further ensuring that 9+1 is going to win the day come October. That, I want least of all.
