I have some recc’s as well depending on where in Greece. My strongest recommendation is to go to Naxos for a few days. Best place I’ve been!

I did Santorini, Mykonos and Crete with the wife and absolutely loved every island (difficult to even say which one was my favorite) - only tip, had to fly into Athens - would recommend limiting Athens to as short as possible (only stayed 1 night there - nothing special; spent a day doing the tourist sites) spent 2 weeks in Greece in total.

It's one of those places, that I would like to go back to. Not for an extended time, but for a couple of days, maybe. We were not received very well by a lot of the population, but that may have been a military thing. American servicemen are known to get rowdy and obnoxious, when filled with alcohol. Ouzo, (sp.), the national drink will natural borne kick your butt. Had a licorice taste to me. If you go, take some tours. The Parthenon, The Acropolis, The national Museum. I saw things that I had only saw in books before. Really awesome stuff. One of our tour guides was a young lady named D'Nai. We probably spent as much time staring at her as we did, the things on the tour. She was gorgeous.

We’re planning a Greek cruise for next August. Want to fly to Venice and leave from that area.

I wanted to go to Venice. I spent a day there about 10 years ago, also on the government dime. For some reason, I was underwhelmed. Maybe I had it built up in my mind too much. Didn't have time to actually ride a gondola, so that may have been the disappointment.
Beware of the street peddlers.

on Crete, where he is stationed at a naval facility.
He sends photos regularly of him and friends parasailing. Other photos depict the island as quite a beautiful place. His wife in fact is a native whom he married several years ago on Crete, and two other nephews, their wives and a female cousin from Arizona flew over for the ceremony. All were impressed.

After 40+ years, it's kinda hard on the memory, but during that same time period, we went to Souda Bay Crete, I know the spelling has got to be off. It was either there on an air base, or a Naval Air Station, again memory is foggy, we would go to the base exchange and get a ribeye steak, that was so big it covered the entire plate, and when they brought it to your table, it was still sizzling. It was as good as any steak, I've eaten here in the states.
Another thing that I do remember about that base was, a guy I was in boot camp with was there at the main gate. I recall he was a spoiled brat, with a big entitled mouth. As I drove our truck through the gate, I looked at him and grinned. I wanted to say hey you jerk do you remember me, but as My division officer was with me, i just let it ride. One thing about the military is, that it has a way of catching up to you. He was still an E2, and I had already advanced to E5. so obviously; not only was he a spoiled brat, but he was also a crap bird.
The things we tend to remember.
