Especially 2018-2023. I like the hire of Rumph but really fail to see how that was an area of weakness that required new leadership.

Exactly. Containment was mediocre. Sacks were mediocre. Leadership from Year 6 players was neutral at best.

I understand the containment argument, it seemed every play Xavier Thomas was held and had to run past the QB to get pressure and containment was lost if QB slipped through

It was a mutual decision. Meaning both felt it was time. We have had less sacks from our DEs it seems than we had a few years back. Containment has been good. Excited to see the fire.

Really? I don't. Most of our players that have had any kind of production or 5th and 6th year guys. Xavier Thomas had health issues but I don't think he got exponentially better from the time he stepped on campus quite frankly. Experienced yes better? I don't know. Henry just had the time to grow into his body and bulk up which was always his biggest issue. Mascoll? Power five defensive end and will always be a Clemson man. Murphy didn't really improve that much either in the opinion of a lot of people. By contrast you look at the development of all the defensive ends for the previous decade. Keep in mind the Power Rangers were inherited. So yeah I have no problem with Coach and if he had stayed another year I could have lived with it but I thought that was our weakest defensive position coaching.

This season ended a streak of 40+ sacks that dated back to 2014. It's not the only stat to show a bit of a slide in DE performance but it is the most glaring. It also sounded like Hall wanted a bigger role, like coordinator but that job is filled at Clemson. He's probably looking for an opportunity to do that elsewhere. Colorado just lost their DE coach to 'Cuse so there is an opening.
FWIW - 54 in 2018 isn't a single season record. It's close. Both Alabama and OK St tied with 57 in 2021. The Cowboys did it in one fewer game than Bama. I don't know if that is the record either but it is the highest total I can find. If anybody has a source for a different one, please share. NCAA team stats are hard to find. TIA.

Recruiting had slipped as elite DE were no longer interested in us like they were just a few years ago. Also, we were not coaching them up well enough and this was being used against us in recruiting.
