I'm gonna say it. We don't need the portal this year!!
When we do if someone is avaliable Our Coaches Will try to get them. The roster is in pretty good shape and the next class coming in has plenty of talent. I CRINGE everytime I read someone crying about not having any players from the portal this year .

Okay I’ll bite. Break down our DE rotation this year and tell me there isn’t concern. We are going to have to rely on two true freshman to play significantly.
We still could have used a couple quality depth pieces at OL as well.

Every year there is concern. This is where Coaches make their money. Coaching players! I know the roster pretty well and it's the same thing every year. Filling holes and coaching them up. I trust the Coaches.

for men’s basketball, don’t have among the nicest facilities in the country for men’s basketball, and don’t have a proven track record of elite success in men’s basketball.
As you know, we have all of these things in football.
Standards and expectations are different as a result.

Brads in the top 30 for salaries. He is making 3 million a year. Our facilities are good and getting better. You have to accomplish things to get more money. When Dabo took over Clemson he wasn’t among the highest paid yet still won conference championships and post season games.

If you couldn't see the name of the person who posted, I don't think there would be as many thumbs down on JK's posts. You can say that he has a bias against football and toward basketball, but what he said is absolutely true. We have fallen short in recruiting AND plugging holes AND coaching up the talent we do have and that's what gets you a 9-4 record. Good, nowhere close to great.

Well I can tell you outside of Parker there is no proven talent. Denhoff has proven to be an ok depth guy but not a proven starter. Patterson is a bust. Sorry but we haven’t seen anything from him. We hope Hoffler is actually the man that steps up and becomes the starter on the other end. Lawson should be playing at PC or Newberry. Then there’s the freshman. We hope Mayo is a stud and I think will develop into a legit force but he’s raw and going to need time. Kissayi needs to redshirt. They might moves Story over which is a cry for help.
The point is when our competition goes and gets key contributions from the portal and we have to rely on young undeveloped talent that’s puts us at a disadvantage.

ugh. it's all relevant to the fact we develop talent and win with recruiting. The last 3 years we have had a lot of injuries and a lot of bad luck with high profile recruits not panning out.
So in 5 years when Clemson has won at least 1 more Natty you will still be yelling about we didn't use the portal and only won 1 natty in the last 8 years

You are very naive if you don’t think the portal has almost exclusively brought FSU back into prominence. Not saying we should do what they are doing but they are now recruiting much better because of it and it showed in their results. Losing their QB derailed a great season for them but they continue to recruit both HS and the portal at a very high level.

Well first off you have to have big money for the top tier transfer targets
2nd you would most likely have to start tampering to gauge interest if you are talking 5 star talent and then end up in a bidding war with another school
3rd you would need to under recruit or tell someone to pursue other opportunities
None of those sounds like Dabo’s current philosophy
Not sure the others that would not require a payday would be any better than what we have.
I am going to go out on a limb here and say that if Rumph or Dabo thought it was a big need they would definitely pursue it. Maybe happy with what they have or what they have coming in the next cycle.

Now this I get. I totally understand this take. Tampering is absolutely not Dabo and won’t ever be Dabo. We also aren’t outbidding for the big players like Caleb downs. I do feel however we can still find some quality depth without going after the big expensive pieces.

Blaming money for us not using the transfer portal to get difference makers is weak.
So is assuming that tampering is necessary.
If that were true, how do we manage to sign elite high school recruits? Why wouldn’t money and tampering be necessary to get those guys too?

Because no one can approach high school students until set periods of time and violations of that result in heavy penalties schools don't want to risk. Top portal players are already paid for when they put their name in the portal, how else do you explain filing for the portal on Monday and signing with their new school on Wednesday? Tampering is huge for portal players and they sign immediately.
Every high schooler wants to go thru the recruiting cycle, visiting schools, etc. It's part of the fun and excitement. Clemson has a year+ to work on these kids and convince them to come to the Valley. Not even remotely close to being the same thing as the portal.
Clemson tried for 3 or was it 4 OL this offseason and failed to get any to sign. That's due to not using money like everyone one else, Clemson seems to prefer using it's NIL $$$ to keep what they have rather than pursuing what they don't. I think that's also why we get top talent out of HS, they appreciate the loyalty.

I agree that another rotation piece at DE (and OL) would be nice, but recall Christian Wilkins pitching in and is being more than fine. I think with our depth and talent at DT, moving one over for rotation time (e.g. Peter Woods) eliminates any urgent need.
Now if one of the QBs go down, we will be in trouble…

3. Pwoods has been reported that he will stay at DT. They only intend to move him to DE in an emergency situation which to me may very well happen.

ok with that being said in due time we will utilize the portal. Not this year. Recruiting is on the right track. Thankfully we don't have to reinvent the wheel. Dabo has his eyes open.
Another vital point about the portal is that the player has to fit Clemsons culture. The least amount of offers every year since Dabo has been here.

The last 3 yrs have been challenging and things have been slowly changing to correct our failure to make the CFP. last years class was a pretty good haul and so was this years class. I hear people saying we have needs and that is the case every year. The thing people arent hearing about the portal is,it isnt a fix-all.
Who are the players in the portal?
Who is better than what we have that fits Clemsons culture?
What have we done to fix things.

No it absolutely isn’t a fix all and we shouldn’t be a FSU or SC. They aren’t sustainable. But we can absolutely try to get key pieces when we loose a third year player that’s a quality player or when we need to fill a hole. Relying on young inexperienced players puts us at a disadvantage. Two to three players a year is all most of us want to see.

Explain how literally every other college football team utilizes it but us and somehow we have the magic sauce that makes us elite so much so that we don’t need to use it? Well I’ve watched the last three years and I think it’s obvious we are at a disadvantage and need to utilize it even if it’s just for a couple players each year.

Why didn’t we land those OL? How did we loose a guy to GT?
Until we actually land legitimate contributor from the portal we aren’t using it.

My guess is we are saving the space for the 2025 class as there is high interest but not many spaces given we have alot of young talent.

DE has been the biggest concern the offseason. without another solid de things get really tough for Parker. Hopefully after spring we have a better take on the available players on the roster if not surely there will be talent in the portal.

The Tigers offered 3 different portal O Linemen since the bowl game, and whiffed on all three.
Given how Cade has to run for his life so often, a couple of different O Linemen could make a big, immediate difference. Why the whiff?
Because Dabo has given Clemson the appearance of not liking anything about the portal. I like him and I respect his accomplishments, but the portal is a one way street out of Tiger Town right now.

I will say at the beginning of Jan we were the top team in the ACC. The portal closed and we are now picked to finish 3rd.

We’ve proven that it can be done. We fund and support the program accordingly.
We have underachieved THREE years in a row. The most recent three years. Clinging to better results from years prior might make you feel better, but they do little to change the current reality which is that we are no longer elite. We are not even the best team in a weak ACC anymore. We’ve really fallen.

I think KOG is correct. We’re in pretty good shape, would not mind having an extra DE or an extra OL or RB for depth, might see us jump in the portal for one or two of those needs, but other than that we are good.
Regarding DE, against a pass heavy offense, I think we might put two DTs and one DE on the field with one of our linebackers flying in w no hand in the dirt.
At the moment, against a run heavy offense, we do lack depth at DE.

I hope I’m wrong.
We have a lot of questions marks that could make or break the season. How many freshman will rise up and win starting positions and look good doing it? How much more improved will the offense be? The Defense as discussed definitely has questions at DE depth. Still alot of talent on the Defense. Year 3 for Goodwin. He showed improvement last year. He has put together a good staff.

I really don't understand why it has to be all or nothing with some of the posters here. The concept of "either you're completely against the portal or you hate Dabo" is stupid. You can love and respect Dabo while also saying I think we should use the portal some. I absolutely fit in that category. We recruit well, but not everybody we recruit will be a two-deep contributor. The best programs in the country bring in six or so guys every off-season to supplement their elite recruiting classes. The sport has evolved and if we don't evolve with it we will get left behind by the elite programs.
