I know everyone wants to go after our WR

Nov 9, 2022, 7:58 PM

But please go look up the YouTube channel has been breaking down how often our receivers are open but are being missed. If DW4 or TLAW had this group we would be undefeated. I know the coaches have to see it in the film room, I just can’t understand why it hasn’t changed. Best case scenario the ND game woke everyone up ?

nope, qb1 is bad.

Nov 9, 2022, 8:00 PM

We are struggling at the quarterback position.

Nov 9, 2022, 8:17 PM

It’s not that they are not getting open it when the ball is actually thrown their way they do not seem to go get the ball. A good example was Ngata with Cades interception, although Cade should not have thrown it Ngata did not even try to come back to the ball, he just waited for it to get to him allowing the defender to get in front of him. That is just one example of many with our 50/50 type receivers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that was a total fail call on the oc

Nov 9, 2022, 8:24 PM

roll right, with a right handed qb, no chip on the DE.... doomed from the start. horrible call... now, Cade should have thrown it into the seats, but he was put in to make something happen. again, total fail on the coaching staff.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope. Throwing late across his body over the middle was

Nov 9, 2022, 8:37 PM

completely Cade's decision. That was improv, not the playcall. Totally on Cade.

Re: Nope. Throwing late across his body over the middle was

Nov 10, 2022, 1:18 PM

All of our receivers need to take a teaching from the example of A.J Brown WR for the Philadelphia Eagles - Watch how when he sees the ball coming his way, his attitude is that that is his ball only, and when it gets close to him he takes whatever measure required to make sure HE goes to get the ball, then SNATCHES it for himself despite all efforts from the DB's. Our receivers have not been taught this nor do they apparently practice it at all!

Re: Cade does not yet have situational awareness

Nov 9, 2022, 9:59 PM [ in reply to that was a total fail call on the oc ]

Good play or bad play from Streeter, Cade needed to recognize that the play was a bust and then throw the ball away.

Until Cade acquires the needed situational awareness that is required of a starting QB, he won't be ready to take the reins as starting QB.

Cade clearly isn't there yet. (I am confident that he will be great in another year or two, though.)

Ngata needed to make a play on the ball.

Re: Cade does not yet have situational awareness

Nov 10, 2022, 9:16 AM

Ngata does not go up and fight for the ball. We've had several 50/50 balls get throw to him that he doesn't go after. They become 10/40/50 balls. 10% complete, 40% incomplete, 50% intercepted.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You mean like throwing 40 yd pass on a 4th and 4

Nov 10, 2022, 10:45 AM [ in reply to Re: Cade does not yet have situational awareness ]

When RB is wide open 5 yards away with no defender within 15 yards? Is this the type of situational awareness you are referring to RememberTheDanny ?

Re: that was a total fail call on the oc

Nov 10, 2022, 8:17 PM [ in reply to that was a total fail call on the oc ]

Nope…you’re wrong…Cade is a gunslinger…he is Johnny Manzelle…he does not have a strong Arm but he has MICU and quickness and speed and an undeniable belief in himself and making plays…there is good and bad associated with those traits…the decision at ND was the bad!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Come on man. Did you see DJ frozen in the pocket against ND?

Nov 9, 2022, 8:35 PM [ in reply to Re: I know everyone wants to go after our WR ]

Lacking confidence to make a throw, and missing guys running free? And he very rarely takes a chance at 50/50 balls, even when he's told to just throw it! And then even when he does throw it, more often than not he doesn't even put it in a place where the receiver can get it. Trevor and Deshaun for instance, we're great at this. When there's 1:1 downfield, you throw it in a spot that benefits your WR, and let him go get it!

Re: I know everyone wants to go after our WR

Nov 9, 2022, 9:55 PM [ in reply to Re: I know everyone wants to go after our WR ]

Did you have a chance to read Dabo's (recent interview comments) about DJU's pik-6 late in the ND game?

Dabo said that Ngata (again) was in a route for a back-shoulder pass.

DJU threw a perfect ball ... right to where Ngata was supposed to be.

But Ngata didn't turn his head around and got out of position for the pass.

ND's D-back had no opposition (i.e., no WR body to block him out) and had an easy interception.

++++++++++++++++++++++=

Does anyone wonder why we remain frustrated with our WRs (with the obvious exception being Antonio Williams ... a budding super star)?

Place the blame where it belongs instead of reflexively blaming everything on DJU.

Nov 10, 2022, 12:08 AM [ in reply to Re: I know everyone wants to go after our WR ]

Cades hand was hit by a defender as he released it or it would have been a completion. Go back and watch it.

Somebody whiffed on the block, had it been held for 2 1/2 seconds Cade would not have been hit on the hand as he released the ball.

He would have made that throw perfectly even if it was across his body, he’s well capable of making that play. If they would have held the blocks on that play he would have been a hero & not a zero.

Yep, Dabo actually mentioned yesterday that Cade's interception was on the receiver, not Cade.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly. The whole, "WRs aren't getting separation" is a myth.

Nov 9, 2022, 8:30 PM

When you sit in the stands and pay attention, on almost every pass play there are open guys who aren't being found in any sort of progressive QB read.

I've said the same thing - insert Trevor or Deshaun, or heck even a guy like Stetson Bennett or Sam Hartman, and this offense explodes.

It ALL starts with QB play. Not seeing open guys is just one of several issues that have crept back into DJ's game.

Re: Exactly. The whole, "WRs aren't getting separation" is a myth.

I’m sure glad that he greatly improved from last year as the coaches said or he would be really bad!!!

Re: I know everyone wants to go after our WR

Nov 10, 2022, 12:04 AM

Yep.
Rewatch the 4th and 4 long pass and you'll see an open potential receiver running towards 1st down line - a short easy pass.
Same thing for the prior play.

DJ does not see the full field.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Take your feelings out of it and just look at the PFF grades

Nov 10, 2022, 8:03 AM

Our wide receivers are the lowest grading position on the field. The analytics say:

They don’t run good routes
They don’t block
And they don’t catch well

The blocking is a killer. Because we’d be a much better running team if we could block in the second level.

I hear people say that shipley doesn’t have that 2nd gear. It’s because DB’s and Safety’s have good clear angles at him and that’s because our WR’s are off in la la land.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Right. Lack of blocking WRs terribly limits the offense.

The WR's aren't entirely immune from responsibility...

Nov 10, 2022, 10:10 AM

There are still times when they don't block, they don't battle for 50/50 balls, they don't get any separation, and they drop balls.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Re: The WR's aren't entirely immune from responsibility...

Nov 10, 2022, 10:49 AM

Never said they weren’t, people continue to say they aren’t open which simply isn’t the truth. Never said anything about their lack of blocking or fight for the ball. But they are open on a good bit of our just not getting seen. It’s almost like they don’t have any confidence that the plays are going to work and if they do they aren’t confident the ball will get delivered. Its like the lack of confidence is seeping into the entire team, our old WR fought because they knew it would be there.

This may be true but if we had a Watkins, Hopkins, Williams, or Higgins I think we'd know it. We don't. They don't block either. The whole offense is a poorly Coached piece of trash and the recruiting is going to suffer next.

Re: I know everyone wants to go after our WR

Nov 10, 2022, 8:15 PM

Here’s the deal…we have never had the best roster nor the best team when we won nattys … but we had a difference maker at Qb…one who could overcome play calling or other breakdowns…we don’t have that…we also had defenses that were badass … we don’t have that either..:we are a very good average football team…1) because of QB … 2) because of defense!!! It’s that simple!!! NOTHING ABOUT THIS TEAM IS ELITE NOR SPECIAL FROM THE COACHING TO THE PLAYERS!!! They are just all very good!!! It is what it is!!!
