It's a soccer thing. Look at MLS teams, Atlanta United, D.C. United. It is rooted in naming from the British Premier League.

Same reason they call the field a "pitch" and their uniforms a "kit" and zero is "nil".
Makes us feel like we're playing with the big boys in Europe and Central/South America when we do all that.
