I caught an interview with the Cal athletic director on a

22

Aug 12, 2023, 3:03 PM

National show while driving around today. It was an interesting and informative interview, but nothing else could have made it more clear that any athletic association with them would be a disaster. The bad kind.

He extolled the virtues and achievements he was obviously most proud of; diversifying the athletic department by race and gender, DEI, and other social programs. I’m not going to get into the politics of it all, but it certainly fits in with Cals publicized stance on what they support and what they muzzle, so by all means, you do you Cal.

Even though the opening was there, he did not offer or discuss what they could bring to the table financially or athletically, and nothing about FOOTBALL. I’m sorry, but football is the sole reason for any new alliances. That is the key to long term sustainability of any conference, and if we make the right moves, that economic tide will lift all boats; those boats being basketball, baseball, soccer, softball, rowing, track, ultimate frisbee, inter mural rugby, whatever.

I firmly believe that our directors and board will do what is best for Clemson, and one way or another, we’ll end up in the BIG or SEC. But not this year. This year we’ll have to win one more national championship for the ACC and financially support our underachieving brethren.

Can’t wait for the season to start

I think what he said was pretty self explanatory. Cal is a woke, liberal, university that happens to have a football program needing new home.

It's fair to surmise that he was inferring "you dodged a bullet" and don't want Cal in the ACC, or affiliated with Clemson.

TennesseeVol made a great point, a sentiment that every Clemson alumn I know shares.

Absolutely nothing, but to them, all that DEI, CRT, etc., makes them a hot mess and certainly NOT a good fit.

In any partnership, you want your partners to be a good fit and that includes similar attitudes and approaches. Cal, is , nor would it ever be, a good fit.

Sit near one of their fans at a game and you will hear how they hate God, hate the backward South, etc. I see you know nothing about them. If they come to Clemson be ready for a real awakening if you have an invocation (prayer) before the game. They will holler and shout to try and disrupt it as you will be what they will let you know you are "Violating separation of church and state". Its a bad experience being within earshot of them. You will see what far left liberals are really like.

Are we supposed to be impressed by moron-diversity-aceeptees??? Because I promise you, that's who's attending, and being "educated" at a place like Cal.

Cal isn't in the business of accepting the "best and brightest". Maybe they once were, but not anymore.

Nowadays they're in the business of filling racial, and gender quotas. Which means most of the really smart & qualified students probably end up at schools like Clemson.

Color me not impressed.

I live about 15 miles from Berkeley. I know a lot of Cal grads and worked with a lot of Cal grads. Some are very liberal, some are very middle-of-the-road, and some are more conservative than you can imagine. The one thing they all are is very smart. Cal's reputation in general is a holdover from the 60s. Now they're more of a microcosm of the general world.

There are plenty of schools that meet the definition of "woke and liberal" (whatever bad thing that's supposed to mean), but that are very competitive in football and athletics in general.

Oregon, Stanford, USC....I doubt these are places with a large MAGA following. But they have had some very good football teams in recent decades.

I think Cal's problem is just a lack of interest in football. They just have not invested in it, and their program has fallen off the radar. It's very sad, because Cal has some decent points in their history. They've had good teams in the past. They also won a game via "The Play" in 1982, which IMO is still the craziest play in college football history. They had a quarterback in 1976, named Joe Roth, who was an All-American with a probable future in the NFL, who was stricken with Cancer, but played the season out even though he knew he was dying. Aaron Rogers carved up the Pac-10 during his years about 2 decades ago.

Anyway, they only have themselves to blame. But being good at football is independent from the political view of the school or even the AD.

Conference Alignment

Aug 12, 2023, 7:39 PM

Conference alignment is all about sports. Cal is a great academic university that adds nothing to the improvement of sports marketability for the ACC. Cal and other schools, including some in the ACC, are currently in the middle of a wake up call. Like it or not, football is king in sports. Some schools had better get their football houses in order or they will definitely be left behind.

As for Cal making jerks out of themselves during the prayer at Tennessee, actions have consequences. If they are wanting to save their sports programs, they are going to have to learn to be good visitors to southern stadiums. The buck stops with the Cal AD. iIf he does not see the writing on the wall, he needs to be replaced.

One of the shooting victims was the son of a public school education employee in my area. VA Tech brought their entire band to one of our high school games. The victim was a band member when he was in high school. There are two football game band performances that I will never forget. One is the joint performance of Clemson and USCjr bands honoring the Charleston 9. The other is the Va Tech band performing with the local high school band honoring their shooting victims.

Appreciate the discussion on Cal and Stanford's potentially joining the ACC. A couple of things:
- Jim Knowlton, Cal's Athletic Director has not to my knowledge (I'm a major donor and a board member of Cal's NIL Collective) done any media appearances on the topic of conference realignment so there may be some confusion here
- Cal has a very large and passionate alum base that needs only a decent level of success on the field or the basketball court to be activated. The two revenue sports were not being properly invested against by the University until recently. That was prompted by donors raising meaningful funds for football that brought the Bears to the top half of the Pac-12 in terms of overall budget. Cal's NIL Collective has been incredibly successful as evidenced by the Football team having 247s #15 ranked transfer class and On3's 7th ranked basketball class
- It wasn't long ago that Cal was the #2 Football program behind USC - From 2002-2009, Cal was perennially nationally ranked and filling the NFL with star players. TV ratings were high and Memorial Stadium was sold out for most games
- Cal has always traveled well, bringing @15k fans to our victory over Ole Miss, and close to 20k to our victory over Texas

I hope the additional information was helpful and my fingers are crossed that Clemson and the other three dissenting votes in the ACC change their minds

The interview I referenced was on after lunch today. May or may not have been live. The Cal representative was followed by the Mountain West Commissioner, Gloria Nevarez.

I didn't catch the name and assumed the Cal representative was the athletic director. After looking up Knowlton, I was mistaken. The interviewee did not sound like a West Point Graduate and I did hear him say he was a Cal alum.

I apologize for misidentifying the speaker.

That doesn’t change the message or the reception. I wish your university all the success in the future and I hope you find an adequate landing spot, but even if it’s the ACC, we won’t be involved.

Well said BearInsider! Another Cal fan here.

Just to add a little additional background info, our AD, Jim Knowlton, is a retired Army officer and was the AD at Air Force. He’s a registered Republican, has a second home in Colorado Springs and donates to Colorado Republicans (including Lauren Boebert). He’s hardly a Berkeley liberal.

I’ll also say that I hope you can see some value in adding Cal and Stanford to the ACC, even if it’s just that you think we’ll be easy Ws on your schedule. However, I know you all have higher aspirations than the ACC and I know that will be a big factor in how you vote. I’ll understand the reasons behind whatever you decide, even If I may not like it.

Aug 13, 2023, 7:00 AM

Personally I don't know much about Cal athletics other than the folks who picked your conference apart chose not to include your school in their invitations to leave the PAC-12. I'm only concerned with the GEOGRAPHY involved with your addition to the ACC. It's ridiculously far from our conference members. The travel for all sports for our members and certainly Cal athletes would be horrendous. Joining the ACC is a desperation move and provides very little upside to you or Stanford.

The PAC-12 has 2 years to get to 8 members (to remain a power conference) so try looking to add rather than begging to join the ACC.
Sucks the BIG-10 raided the conference but know one said life was fair. Good Luck......
