Honest assessment about last night. Encouraging BUT

a little discouraging with respect to the O Line. We saw Shipley and Spiller get into it when Spiller questioned Shipley's effort on 2nd and goal----Shipley claims the O Line isn't getting any push when needed and didn't back down from Spiller. He's right. They aren't. We had issues getting any push on short-yardage situations all night long. This has been an issue for the last two seasons. Bottom line is, the O Line is the weak link to this team. Dabo blew sunshine up our collective azzes this summer telling us how "good" they were. Our center spends more time our backfield than Shipley. He gets blown off the ball every, single series. I've seen no improvement over three games against inferior competition and that's concerning.

FSU will overload this O Line with a lot of different pressures/looks to force Cade out of the pocket and make him uncomfortable. Zero doubt this is what they will do. We will see if the O Line can respond.

Issues at WR continue. The fluke play where Randall caught the ball on 3rd and long was due to the fact that he ran the wrong route---but got rewarded with the fluke deflection/catch off of Williams' hands. Hmmm.

Special teams is a dumpster fire at this point No other way to sugar coat it If we need a FG kick to win or force OT, we are screwed.

Now for the good. And there was a lot of it.

On the positive side, Cade didn't make any mistakes that cost us. Yes, he forced one ball to Stellato that under normal circumstances against better competition, would have been intercepted. But he managed the game and went through his progressions MUCH better than the previous two games. Kudos to Cade for showing major improvement from last week.

We saw Barnes emerge and play out of his mind. It begs the question as to whether Mukuba will have a starting job when he's back from injury. TJ Parker is our best DE. He should be starting in place of Mascoll. If "Best is the Standard", there is zero doubt about these two. Tyler Brown's emergence is encouraging-he has elite burst. Briningstool was a factor--also very encouraging and he looked sharp. Lukus was also solid. Terrell made some good plays. Overall I thought the defense played very well---in short, good enough to beat FSU.

But a lot of question marks on special teams/offense remain. The issues on the O Line are particularly perplexing after the glowing reviews Dabo gave this unit over the fall camp. WR play continues to be questionable, with receivers running bad routes and missing blocks. From all accounts Gunn seems to have great performances in practice, but when the lights go on, he loses composure and becomes erratic. Swanson had a subpar performance as well. Fortunately, FAU didn't bring Ray Guy last night so it was a wash.

FSU comes into Tigertown with a few issues that have emerged (poor LB play, vulnerable to the run), so this game really comes down to the O Line IMO. If our O Line can play up to the competition, I like our chances.

Half his weight in salt. Yet Dabo pictures him as a fantastic Olineman…

I don't like to call out single players, but honestly this is becoming comical. Putnam gets pushed around like a turnstile. If we can't get Linthicum going, I'm concerned.

I am not the only one tired of and disappointed with Dabo’s continual press pumping up of obvious deficiencies. DJU was the ultimate and now it is o-line and team speed. My ultimate respect for Dabo has fallen a bit in the last 12 months.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

No lies here. Put up or shut up time for the OL, otherwise it’s going to be a long day Saturday. Leigh has flashed, but don’t see the constant aggression needed to be an elite OL. That interior push by FAU was sickening.

The O line is a mystery. Clemson used to only land 3 stars and now they are getting 4 stars and the results are the same. Are they evaluating properly and just missing? They changed coaches and the results are still the same. Maybe it's strength and conditioning.

These are great questions. What's odd is Morris was able to get a lot more out of lower-rated players. I'm hoping a lot of it is adjustment to the new offensive scheme. But after 3 games, I'm concerned it's leaning more towards coaching/talent evaluation.

That pass was intended for Randell but Antonio ran his route too deep. Nothing fluke about it Coot

That actually makes sense because the throw was 3 feet behind Williams.

Good post. More encouraging from that game than not but can’t help but be concerned about how our deficiencies (specifically O line play, ball security and special teams) will impact us in a game where there’s far less margin for error.

The push that FAU got on our line, not every down but more than I’d like to see, in short yardage and pass pro, was deeply concerning.

Ridgeland. I definitely agree on Parker and until last night was in full agreement on Mascoll, however last night Mascoll played one of his better games. He got some pressure and was solid on run D. Where the heck is XT? Do we go ahead and slide Woods or Ruke over? Capehart and Page provide the above avg. depth to do this

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good assessment. Exactly what I saw last night.

Mascoll didn't play badly but TJ is ahead. I thought it would be Woods we'd be raving about on the DL.

Definitely thought Woods name would be called out quite a bit. Poster above mentioned Page. Had forgotten him. Was a big time recruit but haven't seen his named mentioned in practice reports.

Do you have any opinion about the level of effectiveness the Strength & Conditioning program has on the Oline? Seem to recall Morris wanted some changes when he arrived along with comments made by one or more NFL team assistants that draftable OL lacked NFL ready strength. This may not be an isue currently, but something isn't clicking.

Glad someone asked..I've been wondering about this too. For too long the Oline seemed to get pushed around. But if it SC, why not the defense showing the same?

Short yardage has been a problem off and on since the Bowden days.
