Here is a total of 10 win seasons in between Danny Ford's

firing, and Dabo Swinney being named permanent Head Coach at Clemson in 2009, a period of 20 years.

1990 - Ken Hatfield, 10-2, in his first year, with Danny's last team pretty much intact.

That is IT, only one year where we won 10 games. It was all downhill, WAY downhill, from there.

Our current Head Coach, who some of you Single Helix Mutoids want to run off now, has a streak of TWELVE STRAIGHT YEARS of winning 10 or more games in a season.

For that 20 year period 1990-2008, our average wins per year was 6.95. We finished a season as a ranked team only seven times during that stretch, with the highest again being Ken Hatfield's first year, 1990, at #9. We were #18 in 1991, #23 in Hatfield's last year of 1993, and then we would not return to the season end rankings until 2000, under Tommy Bowden, at #16. That was his high water mark, as we were ranked a total of five times during his 10 year tenure, with the next highest ranking being #21, twice.

In 14 full seasons under Dabo Swinney, we have missed the season ending rankings only once, in 2010. We have won the ACC 8 times in those same 14 years, after only winning it ONCE in the preceeding 20 years, and that was back in 1991 in Ken Hatfield's 2nd year. We have won 2 National Championships, and made it to the final game two other times, made the Playoffs six straight times.

I, for one, do not want Clemson to go back to wandering in the Wilderness of Mediocrity for another 20 years. And, to those who say "that wouldn't happen now, we have a better foundation", I say bull butter. Danny Ford had laid a good foundation too, good enough that Ken Hatfield took the Clemson job before ever setting foot on campus. It didn't take long for him to erode that foundation, but it sure took awhile to rebuild it after he and two more coaches that followed him could not get us back to anything approaching those levels of success.

So, continue to act like complete nincompoops on these message boards. Continue to beyotch and moan, and declare that you know how to fix our football program better than those who are paid to do it. You may get your wish, but it won't be what you thought you were getting, I would wager that much. I, for one, am eternally grateful for all the Dabo Swinney has accomplished at Clemson. He has earned my trust, even if his decisions sometimes puzzle me. Because, I have seen what the opposite looks like, and I MUCH prefer what we have now.

I agree with you 100%.

I will also tell you what everyone who opposes this view is thinking:

- Clemson has shown that we will pay top dollar for a good coach. (Something we didn’t show after Danny Ford)

- Clemson has top notch facilities, more media exposure, bigger recruiting base (Also different than the time between Ford and Swinney).

Thx 76er for a heads uP on what firing Dabo would do

6

Sep 28, 2023, 11:15 AM

but I really truly don’t think a Clemson FB Fan with any IQ would ever want to go that departure route.

Hale, Coach Frank Howard got to hang around Tigertown from his prior better years for umpteen years with win records 50% lower than Dabo’s worst!

Go TiGERS, Suckk it uP & ROCK!

Clemson football. The only way it could have been much worse is if we had our current field goal kicker, and he MISSED the game winner in the rain at Homecoming against Weak Florist. Our only other win, somehow, was North Carolina, in Chapel Hole. They were 3-7-1 that year, which was better than us. Worst all time loss against the Coots, for which I was live in person. Just a miserable year, all the way around.

I wish I could implant those memories in anybody who is stupid enough to want to run Dabo Swinney off. They would come to their senses REAL fast.

and highlighting the tremendous job Dabo did in making us champions (twice!). However, I think everyone here is aware of his many accomplishments and is grateful for all that he has done.

If you want to continue to bask in those accomplishments while ignoring the current reality, that's your right. But for some of us, the mediocre results we are seeing right now under Dabo are occurring because of decisions Dabo has made the last few years. It's very concerning.

You see, for all of Dabo's accomplishments, he's made several poor decisions that have hurt our program:

1. He promoted Goodwin and Conn to co-DCs, neither of whom had ANY experience as defensive coordinators. In fact, neither had significant coaching experience at the collegiate level. Dabo could've brought in a top DC if he wanted to. The funds were there, and the AD would've rubber stamped it. But Dabo didn't do that.

2. He promoted Streeter to OC instead of bringing in a top offensive mind. Signs were there under Elliott that we needed fresh ideas and a new approach to our offense, but instead Dabo promoted a guy who has no offensive coordinator experience at the power 5 level (and not a whole of experience as an OC in general).

3. He hired the likes of Grisham, Spiller, Richardson, and Austin for position coaches. All of these guys had little to no college coaching experience.

4. Dabo refused to use the transfer portal, and has gone out of his way to criticize it publicly. That's a horrible PR strategy when talented players from other programs would love to be part of what Clemson is doing.

5. Dabo has also publicly railed against NIL, or at least aspects of it. Again, that's a horrible PR strategy at a time when recruits feel empowered and are motivated by the prospect of making more money.

What Dabo has done is made our coaching staff much less experienced, despite coaching at what was one of the top programs/brands in all of college football just a few years ago. He has also made our program less desirable, and also made our once forward-thinking program appear to be stuck in the olden days by comparison.

Not surprisingly, results have suffered. This year will mark the third year we will miss the playoffs. We currently stand at 2-2, and are 1-4 in our last 5 games against power 5 opponents. Dabo's many accomplishments here are great, but we have underachieved three years in a row now.

Anyone even hinting that Dabo should be on the "hot-seat" have lost their minds. Clemson is better than that - questioning every move a coach makes when the going gets tough. Won't waste time going through all the variables that may have impacted the past 2 years, but strongly believe that we will be back (CFP), sooner rather than later. Question: aren't you the poster that continues to promote Brownell? Why the drastic beliefs between Bball vs Fball?

Mediocre definition, "of only ordinary or moderate quality; neither good nor bad; barely adequate."

If his record is mediocre what is Brownell's?

Where were you when he hired Scott and Elliot as co-offensive coordinators and won a national championship? Neither had any offensive coordinator experience.

I could poke more holes in your post, but won't waste my time.

Or Chad Morris - who only had 1 of experience at the collegiate level and NEVER EVEN PLAYED COLLEGE FOOTBALL. That seemed to work out okay. Then his next promotions from Chad had no coordinator experience and managed to win championships. Venables was on the outs in Oklahoma and had essentially been demoted so Mike Stoops could come back. Oklahoma was 32nd in total defense the season we hired Venables. That worked out okay. Just blathering from an idiot who called Dabo a racist yesterday.

Brownell is 241-177 with a win percentage of .577 at Clemson. His teams have won zero championships of any kind. I'd call that mediocre for sure.

Swinney is 163-41 with a win percentage of .799. His teams have won 2 National Championships, 8 ACC championships, and 10 Atlantic Division Championships, etc, etc.

Despite JK's best efforts, there is absolutely ZERO comparison to draw upon between the two.

Sep 28, 2023, 1:22 PM

Dabo's overall record here has nothing to do with our program's most recent performance. But since it's been brought up numerous times, it actually makes our current situation that much worse because it illustrates how far we've fallen.

If we want to talk about how great our national championships were, that's fine, but it does nothing to address our current issues.

The tone of 76ers' original post was that Dabo is wonderful and as a result of his tremendous success here, we have no right to be disappointed in the current state of our program. I disagree.

Why can't we be thrilled with and appreciative for all that Dabo has accomplished, but also very concerned about the recent trends in our program?

There aren't really any obvious solutions.

The problem is that we no longer have the advantages in recruiting that we had several years ago. The only way to improve is to figure out new advantages. Those obviously haven't been figured out, hence the current results.

Big at talking out of both sides of her mouth when dumping on Dabo, the winningest coach in all of Clemson sports history, while pumping Brown L on Clemson Nation, the worst performing basketball coach since the 80's not named Larry Shyatt. This disparity should not be lost on anyone.

She hates the success we've experienced there, and how strong our program is, and would love to do anything to stir up enough angst and discord to see it fail. Conversely, she loves and wallows in the mediocrity and failures in basketball and the lost decade plus we've all experienced there alongside.

All I keep hearing is how deep our quarterback room was (last year), how amazing our receivers are (this year), and how hard this team works (every year). I also see numerous Clemson football players drafted each year, yet we're on year three of underachieving.

Dabo is a great coach and obviously still has the passion. He made the necessary change at OC, which looks like it's starting to take hold with this Clemson offense. If Dabo changes his tune on the portal a little, Clemson isn't going anywhere. Clemson doesn't need to bring in 10 transfers a year or anything, but find 3-4 guys that can upgrade the roster at positions of need. That would make a huge difference.

OK, so now lest look at it this way. what was our most losses over the last 12 years? I recall that it may have had 2 years where we lost 3 games. So if the team only played 12 games and lost at most 3 games. The worse they would have done was 9-3. That's taking away all additional wins but not losses. Seems to me there's still only 1 team over the last 12 years that can say they won at least 9 games over the last 12 years. Care to guess what team that would be. No, it isn't USuC or UGA.

I agree, my point was that just because they only played 12 games in the 80's Dabo would still have a record only matched or beaten by Saban in which Dabo is 2-2 against him. They would have won 10 games in no less than 9 of the last 12 years if you only remove the additional wins above a 12 game season.

I love Dabo. Was so happy that they offered him the job after he beat SCar way back when.
But I’m also not going to blindly follow him just because he’s brought success we hadn’t seen before.
It’s also true that offering up criticism of him doesn’t equate to “fire Dabo.”

Dabo has created a standard of what the Clemson Football program should be. Not he happy about the direction of the program comes with it.
You can’t have your cake and eat it as well.

100% agree. I was a fan back in the Red Parker days and what we have now is way better. Am I frustrated at how the season has started? Absolutely but no real fans would want Dabo gone. I know I for one have tried enjoy the last ten years and in Dabo's words "Live in the moment" Looking forward to the rest of the season and how it may or may not go the way I want but I for one thing will enjoy pulling for my Tigers!

TBF, there was an 11 game regular season most of that

period, so we were only playing 12 most years, not 13

I would call what we have right now just a lull.

I fully support Dabo without question but to be fair

We played no ACC Championship game then and 11 game regular seasons. Nevertheless I support your premise and we better appreciate Dabo

You are 100% correct. Anyone that disagrees has been a fan only during Dabos tenure. We fans went thru some tough times for many years. I for one don’t want to return to that time. What we are going thru now is nothing to what it could be. Get in behind the tigers and shut up.😁🙋‍♂️

Few on here are old enough to have been through all those...

...ups and downs as a program.

I was in the bleachers during the Cal game when we had clearly the better team getting romped - thanks Hatfield.

I was there in the stands when McNabb and Harrison were roasting the Ford twins.

Look, no one is calling for Dabo's head or unappreciative of what he has done. We are slipping as a program and no one can honestly say we aren't.

Is it wrong to even point that out? Many saw this coming and were laughed out of the room.

I'm to the point now that I don't even read JK's posts. Straight to TD. I have 3000 coins and will spend them effortlessly and without concern until my finger gets amputated or tired. Whichever comes first.

Very well said

and you didn't even bring up HOOTIE - those were WONDERFUL YEARS

Unfortunately we were there and had to live through it

And you didn't even mention Dabo's graduation rate and clean program which no one can match

ALL IN

GO DABO

GO TIGERS
