Clemson Defense Points Allowed

19

Oct 2, 2023, 9:27 AM

Given up 104 points this year (20.8/game)

43 points off turnovers (8.6/game)

7 points in overtime (1.4/game)

Without TO’s and OT, this defense is yeilding 10.8 points per game

You guys giving Wes Goodwin and the Clemson D a hard time are a bunch of dupes that need to wise up.

They aren't perfect, but if the button up the red zone D, they will be downright nasty

Can't wait for the defense to feast on Rattler at Thanksgiving.

Goodwin seems to be growing into his role as DC.

That's great to see, but the point is that Dabo never should've promoted him. He had zero experience as a defensive coordinator, and was an analyst prior to the promotion.

Last year, our defense underachieved despite having multiple future first round NFL draft picks. That's unacceptable for a program that became known for outstanding defense under Venables, and who has the budget to bring in any DC we want.

Elite programs don't promote unqualified candidates from within and have them learn on the job. That's one reason why we aren't elite anymore.

Here's to continued progress under Goodwin, but the jury is still out as to whether he can have our defense consistently performing - especially against top offenses.

Aside from this program being built by a guy that shouldn't have been promoted and never had coordinator experience

Here is how I see it:

BV is the best DC and defensive mind in all of college football. To expect a DC of equal or better talent is unrealistic.

Wes Goodwin has the horsepower and potential to grow into a BV-like DC. Is he there today? No

Just as a thought exercise: Nick Saban needed a new DC. He literally has his pick of the best DC’s in all college (or maybe even pro) football. He picked Kevin Steele…

I take Wes Goodwin over Kevin Steele ANY DAY!

I saw more of Kevin Steele than I ever cared to see when he was our “coordinator”. What a pathetic job he did! That is all!

The fact that it worked out with Dabo has nothing to do

3

Oct 2, 2023, 11:02 AM [ in reply to Re: Goodwin seems to be growing into his role as DC. ]

with Goodwin.

But if you want to make some sort of connection there, it would be to recognize that the odds of Dabo being successful at Clemson based on his resume were very poor, and the odds of another football coach at Clemson beating those odds again are even worse. You've heard the saying about lightning striking the same place twice, right?

While Venables is certainly a brilliant defensive coordinator, there are certainly at least a handful of other very good defensive coordinators out there at the college and professional level. Since we like to brag about being a top two program over a span of years in the playoff era, plus we have set records for coordinator contracts at Clemson, there is no excuse for Dabo not going after one or two of them.

There were literally no barriers to us getting whomever we wanted. Elite defensive talent was in place, elite facilities, model program, and the budget to pay a top salary.

Despite that, Dabo didn't interview any of these candidates. He didn't even consider anyone other than Goodwin and Conn. He said so himself. That is horrible.

I don't think anyone doubts that Goodwin has a lot of knowledge about defenses, but he doesn't have a monopoly on that. Plus, he had zero experience as a DC, and very little football coaching experience at all. You can't convince me that his football smarts are that incredible that they exceed the top defensive coaches in America.

Even if he is that much smarter than everyone else, promoting him to learn on the job is asinine. Again, we've been an elite program recently. Why go the route of having someone like Goodwin learn on the job when there are more qualified candidates we could've gotten who don't have to learn on the job?

You make yourself look more foolish with every post. Our second year defensive coordinator has one of the top units in the country. By comparison our 13th year basketball coach lost to Morehead state in the first round of the NIT after failing to make the NCAAT because he couldn’t beat some of the worst teams in college basketball with 2 possibly 3 future NBA draft picks on his roster.

at a program like Clemson's.

That's the point. We have the type of program where we should go get experienced coaches who have learned and proven their worth on someone else's dime, rather than on ours.

4

Oct 2, 2023, 11:42 AM [ in reply to Goodwin seems to be growing into his role as DC. ]

Please list out the DCs doing better and then you can provide details why that might be.

Fact is, you know nothing about football. Virtually nil.

You’re a fraud and troll with the sole purpose of desperately trying to drag down Clemson’s most successful program (by far) down to the middling and lower level of what pissant Brad has done.

Why did we hire a mid level no high level experience loser anyway? He didn’t have a good enough record nor the experience for our basketball program, and that’s why we’ve been wandering in the wilderness for 13 years!

Why is the losingest coach in Clemson basketball history still coaching anything at our school? He hasn’t gotten ANY better with this golden opportunity. So glad this is his last season, so we can FINALLY step forward in our floundering basketball program.

In his 2nd year, Wes currently has us as the 9th best defense in America. What do you mean by inexperienced?

You’re Judge Keller® a complete fraud.

To those who didn’t watch it unfold a few months ago, “Judge Keller” is a troll run by the moderators of the site. Word once was she was a friend of Crump. Fact is, she is a site troll run by the site with the sole purpose of being clickbait troll.

Well done, troll. Completely full of crap as usual, but good effort. Why did you unban yourself though? You violate site rules with nearly every post. You’re a joke and polluting this site.

I've been as skeptical of the Goodwin hire as anyone but you have to take into consideration that last year the secondary was inexperienced or injured and the whole Bresee saga and Tyler Davis being hurt really kept that D from meeting expectations. No to mention Murphy really mailed it in for the draft.

They look much better this year and are starting to develop some chemistry and consistency that we could not find in 2022. It is time to back off Goodwin.

It's worth noting that we would rank higher if not for some of the offense's turnovers which led to easy touchdowns.

"on-the-job" training for Goodwin . . . . as CharlestonTom® used to LOVE to say about Dabo ALL THE TIME after the hire.

Judge Keller® - give it a rest . . . . 9th in total D.

Lots of football still to play - but there's only 8 slots better right now.

And before you blah, blah, blah about 2 of the 4 games - we were playing 3rd & 4th stringers in the 2nd half on D in those - reps & experience & all . . . .

And if you want to ramble about inferior competition . . . start with Morehead State.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Re: We are 9th in Total Defense. 1 year & 5 games into our

Oct 2, 2023, 11:59 AM

I could not care less where we are ranked now. It's largely irrelevant until the
seasons end when you compile final stats.

Agree or disagree we are playing like a top 10 unit.

I guess Eason lit a fire under the Dlines ### because they were noticebly
better than they've been playing which all preseason pontificating about
when discussing how good our D would be was predicated.

It's a completely different game when they perform as expected.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well yeah, when youre statistically top ten then youre playing like a top ten D.

Oct 2, 2023, 1:22 PM

Lol, what are you talking about??

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Well yeah, when youre statistically top ten then youre playing like a top ten D.

Oct 2, 2023, 1:42 PM

I'm saying even though we are rated top 10 in total D every unit
isn't performing at that level.

Until Saturday's game our D line has underperformed.

Our linebackers have been less than stellar even though they are reportedly
the best duo in the nation. etc ,

Rank 19th in TFL
Rank 104 in sacks
Rank 23 in Pass D
Rank 40 in 3rd down D

Hope this helps
