I'm sure everyone has a fun near death story to share, but this is my first.
Because up till now, as Mrs. Fordt can attest, I've pretty much been immortal.
Well, not anymore  ">">">
Nine days ago I stopped by the local Chinese food joint to pick up some dinner for the family.
While waiting in the lobby, over the course of about 15 minutes, and from no signs whatsoever, I picked up chills so bad they almost rattled my jaw out of my skull and shook my hands so bad I couldn't even drive us home.
I hauled myself into the bed and rode out the shivvers and crushing fatigue for about 6 hours. At about midnight Mrs. Fordt asked me if I was going to sleep it off or if it was ER time. 99% of the time I would have dosed up and slept it off, particularly since I didn't even have the strength to roll over in the bed. There was no pain anywhere in my whole body. Just an overwhelming and relentless weakness that was entirely crushing me.
It's never a good sign when you arrive at a packed ER and you get the magic ticket to the front of the line. That's a big ole red flag. Still no pain at all, but a grogginess so bad my words began to slur. The staff took me back, with Mrs. Fordt holding my hand, and the doctors did their doctor stuff and saved me. They said that it was against their better judgement, but they had to because of some oath they took or something.
Turns out it was severe sepsis. For those lucky enough not to have suffered from it, it's when an itty bitty little infection gets into your blood stream and races through your body like a wildfire. A doctor later told me that if I had gone to sleep that night instead of to the ER, I would have never woken up.
Mrs. Fordt still holds out hope. however.
It's kinda weird being so close to death and never even realizing it. Makes you wonder how many other times it has happened through life. But after nine days in a hospital bed, the best the doctors could explain the cause was maybe a scratch in my foot or leg. There was some redness in that area that I could have missed because I sometimes wear pants, but other than that, no pain, and no clues. By th etime you get the shakes you've got hours, not days.
I had an extended family member die a while back because of a missed infection in a cracked tooth of all things. Three days after they made it to the hospital they were dead. Anyhow, not sure what it all means or what to make of it, but I guess the really bad news is that I'm back. Take that, Death!

Well, kinda. I probably had 20 rotating nurses during my hospital stay. 19 "mostly" lovely ladies and a guy. Guess which one kept drawing "wet wipe" duty for my regular wipedown cleansings? I wish I was joking.

With zero energy there was nothing to do all day and night but sleep and watch bad TV. Luckily, I stumbled into a Twilight Zone Marathon that sustained me through the darkest hours. Young Ross Martin, Jack Klugman, and Telly Savalas have that effect on me.
The other notable exception was a show on the sink hole that demolished a chunk of Corvette Museum in Kentucky. With all those fine wheels I couldn't help but think of you, Obed!

some unbelievable diamonds in those episodes. I love binging on those, esp the really obscure ones.
Saw a cowboy episode called "The Grave".
Had Lee Marvin, Strother Martin, Lee Van Cleef, Stafford Repp (Chief O'Hara on Batman), and James Best (Roscoe P. Coltrane on Dukes of Hazzard). Amazing. Some heavy hitters of the cowboy genre in a 30-minute show.

Well, I'm not sure I ever blacked out, but I will say that my fever induced, hallucinatory fantasies are MUCH wilder than my conscious ones. I had to shake myself out of them a few times telling my subconscious self "No! No!, That can't be real! You're in a hallucination cycle. Snap out of it!"
I didn't see any bright lights or dark abysses, but I did see a LOT of tittehs.

Had been having panic attacks, sweats, palpitations, and so on.
One night, I awoke to bad sweating and panic.... Ended up at the hospital for panic attack, and wound up in the hospital for over a week. Bad sepsis, crazy lactic, etc.
Last thing I remember before the ambulance was trying to get water to hydrate. Such a crazy feeling! I fell, hit my head, woke up answering questions.

Sounds very similar. There wasn't enough water on the planet for me to drink. I must have downed coolers of the stuff with a thirst that simply could not be quenched.
Doc said the lactic release drives your blood pressure down, too. Mine was so low I felt like a wind-up clock going through my last handful of ticks before it winds out completely.
Glad you recovered, too. That sepsis sh it is savage.

In retrospect it has a distinct "That's the best I can do" coin flip feel to it. Literally a 50/50 choice made while half asleep, in the dark. That's pretty damm scary.

I did time in the hospital this past May with sepsis. First night in a hospital bed since I was 5yo.
Chills are the first symptom. I got them one night out of nowhere and they disappeared. Was sleepy mainly the next day. But I literally could not stay awake. Took temp and it was 103 and I literally did not feel like I had fever. Was freaky.
Mine was a cyst that was infected. They cut it out/surgery leaving a hole you could stick a golf ball in. Took 2 months to heal up.
Docs said I was lucky to catch it basically in the first day. Another day or so and I would have been in the ICU or worse. Luckily I had that cyst lanced earlier and doc said if I got any fever to go straight to the ER. When I saw the fever I was at the ER 20 minutes later. I waited about 5 minutes at the ER and was rushed back.
Blood was all messed up. Anemic. Blood was thin. BP was high. Heart was in tachycardia. Platelets were low and too large. Monocytes were oddly normal and should have been high. They swore I was diabetic. Sugars were normal. A1C was 5.6.
Glad you caught it early too. A lot of sepsis going around these days for some odd reason. There is a reason. The doc said mine was obviously the cyst. But not having diabetes or some other condition they had no clue how I got it either. Said it just happens sometimes, mostly to diabetics. Mine was a common fecal bacteria that is nasty when it's not in your digestive tract.
Had I not had that cyst and the instructions to go to the ER I too would have just stayed at home as I did not feel bad enough to normally go to an ER.

Same here. No diabetes, no prior conditions, nothing other than normal heath all my life. Then overnight on death's doorstep. That is terrifying. Glad you made it too. One simply expects warning signs of some sort, or at least I did. Some dramatic moment to herald the event. But nothing. That's the scariest part of all.

But they were clearly mystified. Blood work was all out of whack. They insisted I was on Plavix or some blood thinners. NONE. They insisted I had diabetes. NONE. They gave me some shot in my stomach to prevent clots. This only happens to 70+yo people, and usually with diabetes. A healthy 46yo with no diabetes getting this was very rare, so I was told.
I'm not sure the doctors knew, but I highly suspect they know the reason. If I know it, they know it. But no one wants to talk about it, so I won't either.

Yeah they gave me the heparin blood thinning shot to the stomach. Said it was protocol to avoid conflict with anything else they gave me that might cause clots, but I'm not 70, so who knows.

I thought this was something you get from like swimming in a bacteria-laden swamp for a month or something.

I just happened to decide to take my temp because I couldn't stay awake even 10 minutes. Normally I get chills with a temperature, feel achy, barf, whatever. A 103 temp is miserable, normally. I was just sleepy.
Once they pumped me full of 5 bags of saline and about as many bags of antibiotics fever was gone and I felt fine. Urologist came in, peeked at the cyst, and said "That's got to come out". I said ok, and 3 hours later I was out of surgery. Went home the next day with 6+ FEET of gauze tape packed in the wound. That had to be replaced every day for almost 2 months.

There were a couple of occasions where I thought "Oh, some nice time to read" since I'm lying here, doing nothing anyway, with IV's in both arms.
But when you are too weak and sick to even read, that's a bad spot. Were it not for Rod Serling I might have gone insane from boredom. I felt a little like Burgess Meredith.

on a threadjack note, in my mind this is why the next big pandemic will be of our own making from antibiotic overuse. when we get a super resistant pneumococcus or other common bacteria, antibiotics may not help people in your recent situation, and unfortunately, there aint "new antibotics" in the pipeline right now. Going to be our own doing from overprescribing (don't get me started on the telemedicine craze)

That one might send me back to the hospital with a busted spleen from laughing so hard. I'll just say that I spoke with a lot of nurses on a lot of topics and they had pretty strong opinions on covid-deniers. Mostly just sad and tragic stories. I guess when you see it every day and the impact it has on both individuals and families it colors your opinion pretty significantly on the matter. One nurse said:
"I told this patient 'I'm not political but since you are, tell me what kind of Covid you have - Republican or Democratic? I'm an independent but I just need you tell me the political leaning of your disease so I can treat it...because whether its R or D, you've got Covid."

I'm not exactly a poster boy for cleanliness nor am I any sort of germaphobe. Prolly need to grow up a bit in that regard.
I had a gnarly splinter in my hand. whipped out my knife, dug it out, doused open wound in alcohol, called it good haha. prolly dumb.
when you say scratch...like, a legit just scratch from messing around? did you swim in a lake or anything to get it infected? you shoveling #### on the farm or something?

That would be the PSA in a nutshell, yeah. I've been plenty tired before, and had lots of fevers, but the chills were the giveaway something real bad was up this time.
The scary part was that my lifestyle was as normal as could be. I wasn't shoveling the Yuletide Manure Pile, or even swimming in sewage to ring in the New Year. And no more #### seggs than the usual none. Just normal life stuff.

It might not have even been a cut. Doc thought it could have even been a crack in dry skin on the bottom of my feet. But I wear shoes and socks except when I'm sleeping, and certainly in the winter, so just one big mystery. My only physical signs were a little redness on the foot and lower leg.
Bottom line is some crack or cut, somewhere on my entire body, let that little monster in. Maybe I was overtired from the holidays, maybe the cold weather pushed my immune system down, or maybe it was just one tough bas*** to kill, but the defenses that normally would have killed it and protected me didn't. And then it somehow got from the skin into the blood.

And said look at my foot/leg. She had a red streak running up from her toes to the shin. I said hmm that can't be good. I drove by the foot doctor first thing and showed them a pic and they said go get your daughter now.
Doc came in and said uhhh when did this happen? Told him literally over night. He stated this isn't good at all and took blood work to check blood cell counts. Also said were close to being in the ER and these things can be life threatening. He drew a line around the red streak and told us if the red passed a certain spot call them and head to Fairfax Hospital. Put her on antibiotics and things quickly changed for the better, believe the last follow up us Tue.

Glad you guys jumped on it. I was reading that if it advances into septic shock, which is when your blood pressure is so low it cant's supply your organs completely, every hour delay in getting antibiotics is a 10% increase in the chance of death. Easy math says 10 hours = 100%, so not really something you want to try to "sleep off."
Mrs. Fordt has even had minor bouts from simple clinic injections. Twice now in the past few years she has woken up the day after a flu shot or vaccine and found streaking in her arm from the injection spot. So glad your family is safe!
