Oct 2, 2019, 12:27 PM

If the players are eventually employed by the University, will they eligible for workers compensation if they are injured?

Not a lawyer, but as an employer I can tell you that if they are a sub contractor then no. If they are considered an actual employee then yes. If it is considered some other type of compensation, then I doubt it but don't know.

Actually, I think I misspoke after thinking about it. I am so use to liability waivers and sub's being required to carry their own insurance. It can most likely go either way depending on how they define the compensation, but I imagine they would work it to avoid the issue.

If so, I would think they would have to be on a separate

group insurance plan, and the premiums should be sky high, given the obvious chance of injury in the "workplace".

Right now they get free access to healthcare as a student athlete. Under the new law of profiting from likeness, I doubt the become employees of the school so nothing would change. However, if the schools started paying them wages then certainly they would be employees and should lose their scholarship and perks. They receive compensation, but have to pay tuition, room and board, books, food stipends, and would have to get group insurance, like the previous poster mentioned would be sky high. This is the downfall of college athletics, not just football.
