Noticed on this ACC program that FSU uses flat bronze markers for their sod

cemetery for big wins while Clemson uses the big granite standing tombstones. I like both but ours seems like it takes up a lot of space. Who does it best? Are we getting any this year? Notre Dame was ranked when the Tigers beat them weren't they?

Yes it has I guess. I'm sure some DV sod is getting buried in Tally from this past season after our severe case of fumble-itis and dumb play calling in OT. Should have won that game. Hopefully we can return the favor this year against the new DJU!

Yes, it was. Clemson was favored in that game.

Way back when FSU was still being referred to as a "girl's school" by Gator fans.
Rues for a saod game are simple: 1. Has to be away from home. 2. Underdog 3. Any road game at uf regardless of who the favorite is. 4. Any post season win.
When they win a game, they take a small piece of sod (or artificial turf) from the field and have a ceremony at the sod cemetery on Monday.
**** In 1962, as the football Seminoles completed their Thursday practice in preparation to face the University of Georgia at Sanford Stadium, Dean Coyle Moore, a long-time professor and member of FSU's athletics committee, issued a challenge: " Go win at Georgia when nobody thinks you can do it and bring back some sod from between the hedges at Georgia." On Saturday, October 20, the Seminoles scored an unexpected 18-0 victory over the favored Bulldogs. The team believed even when others doubted them. Team captains Gene McDowell and Red Dawson remembered Dean Moore's challenge and pulled a small piece of grass from the field and returned it to Tallahassee. At the next practice they presented the sod to Dean Moore. He and FSU Coach Bill Peterson had the sod buried on the practice field as a symbol of victory. A monument was placed to commemorate the triumph. The tradition of the Sod Game was born. ******

I always thought Tommy Bowden started it at Clemson but after a search apparently it started with Danny Ford with Clemson's victory in Tally in 1989. I attended that game when I was a teen with my dad.

So what do they do if a win is in a stadium with artificial turf?

The flat markers are to make mowing easier. Lazy grounds crew.

Ha. I guess I kinda like the scarier, spooky look of the tombstones.
