ESPN Insider article re. Christian Wilkins

Jan 5, 2015, 10:15 PM

Good ESPN Insider article. I just copied and pasted it because I couldn't get the link to work:

Only days after turning heads down in Orlando, Under Armour All-America defensive tackle Christian Wilkins has committed to the Clemson Tigers. Wilkins possesses a great motor and has the size and athleticism to be just as effective in the ACC as he was during the UA practices and game.

What he brings: Possesses an excellent combination of size, strength and initial quickness. Can be a disruptive presence in the trenches. With get-off can work through contact, create penetration and disrupt plays in the backfield at times. Also capable of being a tough, stout run defender as he demonstrates the ability to fire out low, uncoil at contact and hold ground. Can be a productive interior pass-rusher, with the size and explosiveness to be an effective bull rusher. Can also work past blockers, displaying ability to quickly attack half-man (playing against one side of an O-lineman instead of engaging the full body in order to gain leverage and maintain separation) and be active with his hands. Can be a physical player with a good motor. The ESPN 300 big man was one of the standouts among a very talented group of DLs during the Under Armour All-America week and, despite not playing against a consistently high level of competition in high school, he proved he can handle what could be considered a slightly steeper jump in competition and not only hold his own but at times excel.

How he fits: This is an outstanding pickup for the Tigers. With a need to bring in youth along the DL, Clemson adds one of the top DTs in the country. Wilkins is far from a finished product and needs to continue to develop technically in areas, such as hand usage, but can be an explosive and disruptive player. He has demonstrated the potential to be a prospect that can come in and quickly work his way into the two-deep and signs are there that he could grow into one of the top DTs in the ACC. Clemson has done a nice job of addressing their needs in the defensive trenches, but Wilkins in our eyes is now the most impactful among that group.

Reminds us of: Wilkins reminds us some of another Under Armour All-America DT Gabe Wright. The 2014 ESPN 300 big man possesses a little better size overall at this stage, but like the Auburn defender Wilkins has the tools to be a tough as well as disruptive player that can get up-field and create problems with the combination of ability and effort.

How the class is shaping up: Clemson is putting together an excellent class that currently sits among the top-five nationally. With the addition of Wilkins the Tigers class now includes 13 ESPN 300 prospects. The strength of the class is in the trenches as Clemson has done a very nice job of addressing needs along both the OL and DL. The OL group is led by No. 2 OT Mitch Hyatt and is one of four OL commits. Wilkins now leads a group of eight commits projected to the DL. The top skilled-position prospect is ESPN 300 WR Deon Cain.

Hyatt was the the top Olineman listed and the only 5 star. Did somebody else get bumped because the committed to Bama or what?

The only OL as good as Hyatt is Martez Ivey. Idk where he falls on that list but on most sites he's the only one I ever see ranked higher.

Thanks for the info Sabletiger®. I watched him during the Under Armor game and put him on my wish list, thinking that we were a long shot. I was shocked when I logged in tonight and saw that he committed.

Really impressive in that game; amazing penetration, beating the offensive linemen on a regular basis. Very disruptive, and has a high motor.

Loved the blocked kick and THEN the scoop and run - that big fellow can move!!!
