End of the Half - Running Down the Clock

This is something that is not specific to Clemson, as I have seen many teams struggle with doing this effectively, but I've noticed it several times this year already amongst different teams.

End of a half, say you're up by 2 and have the ball with 40 seconds left. It would be in your best interest to run off as much of the shot clock as possible, but a bucket effectively ends the game. So many times this year a guard has held the ball until 5-6 seconds left on the shot clock and then finally engaged and thrown up a prayer that isn't even close (or in our case a shot clock violation on two occasions).

This has led to many instances of me yelling at my TV once the shot clock hits 10 seconds to DO SOMETHING.

Why not engage sooner and get a better shot? Is it a genuine strategy thing where you're playing the odds of a turnover against the odds of them making a basket with under 10 seconds on the game clock?

Just seems odd, I'd rather get a good look and try to end the game.

That is the norm for whatever reason but I like your logic.

You are so right as my wife and I both yell at the 10 second mark. It seems that 5-6 seconds is the plan but we have never seen that work out for a score, never.

I also find this super annoying.

Conventional wisdom has been to start your move at about 8 seconds. It gives you a chance to make a play, but also time to pass or possibly get a rebound and another shot.

I understand not wanting to leave too much time for the other team, but waiting until only 5-6 seconds are left is dumb.

I am sure there is a statistical probability

that we haven't been told about as to the best time to begin your scoring attempt. If not we are paying some analyst for a lousy job. The probability is different for each player and his ability to create a scoring opportunity e.g maybe 5 seconds for Chase Hunter, but 8 seconds for Dillon Hunter.

I agree with this, but analytics are analytics. We arent the only team that does this. 5 seconds ensure you will have final possession even with a turnover.

If you wait until 8 seconds are left, if you turn it over or take a quick shot it gives the opposing team to score.
