Did anyone notice the absence of bubble screens...

3

Oct 2, 2023, 12:12 PM

...against SYR? I did, and wonder if it is an admission by the coaches that our WRs just can execute it correctly, OR is it just that SYRs scheme didnt lend itself to that type of play?

If the WR's can't maintain blocks on the perimeter, then the WR screen shouldn't be called.

Well exactly, weve seen this for over 2 years now, but the play kept showing up UNTIL last saturday.

And so far, our WR's have not held their blocks on the perimeter.

Could be the evolution of the offense. Could be what they saw on tape.

One of the receivers (Collins, I think) mentioned that the Cuse DBs were really aggressive and trying to jump routes. It's part of the reason his double-move worked so well for the TD. If a bubble screen gets jumped, either the WR is getting leveled or a pick-6 is a realistic outcome.

It is an indictment on coaches not teaching blocking

Oct 2, 2023, 12:23 PM

To the WRs… you listening Grisham?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There were a couple of screens.

1

Oct 2, 2023, 12:24 PM

One ended up being a turnover. The other one was incomplete, but was close to being a backwards pass/turnover.

There's something in these hills.

Neither were to WRs though

Oct 2, 2023, 12:28 PM

And both looked more like check downs than called screens.

Didn’t we hit Brown for a decent gain on one?

Not that I am advocating for that god awful play

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They work when you have WRs that block***

Clemson needs to watch the Ole Miss vs LSU game and watch how Ole Miss throws bubble/screens.
It really is not difficult, but one of the most important things is you only throw them to shifty type wr's and you line them up in various formations. throwing a bubble to Randall or Collins are the things we do. needs to be brown and williams or even a backup rb split out, you dont throw bubbles to your big wr's.

If the receivers that are supposed to block don't or miss their blocks the play is never going to work... Dbacks are taught to go try and blow the play up...

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes and others must block too***

It's not an admission. Syracuse was able to be had with some deeper throws, particularly with Syracuse committing all those interference penalties.

That screen pass is something most everybody in the country does to a certain extent, and you are going to continue to see it for a long time.

I noticed that too. Likewise, not sure if it was because the deep route was open or they finally got rid of the bubble screen (B-S). We will see next week.

Seems Cuse had 10 guys within 10 yards of LOS and single deep safety

2

Oct 2, 2023, 1:06 PM

This created down field passing opportunities. It also may have made it difficult to run and execute WR screens. When Mafah popped the LOS, no defender had a good angle.

Speed and executing down field throws may back off CBs and even LBs and allow more bubble screens.Defenses usually try to take something away. But I am no expert ….

Tropical. You are correct. Screens are hard to execute when D backs are at the line of scrimmage. Clemson seems to try it anyway except against Cuse. Hopefully the trend continues.

Over the past couple of years, the receivers are not

Oct 2, 2023, 1:15 PM

able to block at the same level as the 2012-2020 seasons.

This weekend I saw more over the middle and downfield throws and was excited to see it. Maybe the team simply is not capable of getting good production from screens and why do something you are not good at.

Also, TL16 got the ball to receiver so quickly where a millisecond is all the receiver needs to evade a tackler sometimes which can lead to a nice gain or loss of yards.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I did, and it was amazing!

YES... load the box, go over the top... sit back, pick 'em apart short.

I enjoyed seeing the team willing to open it up downfield but it was because Syracuse played a defensive scheme that put that as the best option

I still haven't seen any WR blocking as good as Tee Higgins. When the ball wasn't coming to him, he was escorting some poor defender down the sidelines to watch us score.

That's who players/coaches should study. It literally paid off for him very well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Grisham aint teaching that! Pisses me off!***

Re: Did anyone notice the absence of bubble screens...

Oct 2, 2023, 4:41 PM

The bubble screen is a great play when its mixed in and not the primary base play of the offense. Like you said it is also heavily reliant on perimeter blocking by wrs and TEs(both have groups not looked very physical doing so)

A screen here and there is perfectly acceptable to keep the defense honest and possibly set up a double move later, but geez calling a dozen a game and never going deep just makes us super easy to defend.

Re: Did anyone notice the absence of bubble screens...

Oct 3, 2023, 12:36 PM

I think it's an admission that our WR and TE just can't block well enough.

It's a shame because properly executed (sparingly and at the right time) it can really make a defense pay.
