Some guy on the interwebs said to mix dish detergent with water and spray your veggie plants

If you want to kill your plants, do that. You will no longer have a beetle problem though.

You talking about the green and gold scarab type or the orange looking lady bug type? The orange lady bug style have been bad for few yrs but amazingly bad in Iowa. You better have screens on your windows and doors.

I put up a few traps away from everything and my Japanese beetle issue seems to be better…now I just have a whole swarm of June Bugs in the yard…guess I need to put something out to kill grubs this fall?

They make a trap that you hang in a tree to catch them. I have caught dozens of those useless creatures. I get my traps from Ace Hardware.

The traps would catch upwards of a pint of beetles per day. Doesn't slow them down. Just makes another stinking mess.

It takes a while but they do work over time. I had 20 acres. Took 2 years to see the results. Burn barrel took care of the stinking mess, along with glue trapped mice from shop.

The Amish in my area will not use anything poison related on their plants as they don't want that in their system. They use hydrated lime. It is a powder. Dust onto the plants in the morning while dew is on the leaves and it will stick. I did this and no beetles and no poison for me, either.

I use Sevin spray. But, I can't reach the tops of my Jap Maples or Cherry trees that they turn the leaves to lace.

You can't get rid of them with traps, in fact traps attract them, and can make things worse.
To control them you need to put grub killer on the ground around areas they attack. This should be done in Winter/Spring.

Its a three stage process, start with the traps, place 3 or 4 way from your house. Theirs a spray you connect to hose and when they are in the trees and/or shrubs hose them down very liberally. Last when they go to hibernate another kind of insecticide you spray on the ground kills the larva. They should be gone next year, I done this and have not had them for 2 years.

I repeat, the deal is to get rid of the grubs. It aint that hard. Just fighting the bugs will fail.

In addition to normal grub killers, milky spore works great. It is expensive, but will last and expand for years.

Early next spring, kill the grubs while they are still in your soil. Many products on the market will do it plus there are some home remedies. Once they are mature, the only way is to spray with insecticide and/or buy "beetle Bags" and hang in your garden or on the trees where they infest.
