Bourbon Talk - Holiday Bourbon Menu

I'll be kicking off the weekend in a couple of hours with some bourbon and rye whiskey. I will be choosing from the following menu for the holiday weekend. These are amongst my favorite bourbons and ryes.

Remus single barrel
Chattanooga Cask 111
Uncle Nearest single barrel
Blue Note Uncut
Dry Fly Distilling specialty barrel
Penelope barrel strength
Old Forester 1920
Uncle Nearest rye

Which bourbons or ryes will you be sipping this weekend?

I have been involved in a SQL professional refresher for several days now and it is punishing. Just punishing.

Therefore, bourbon is in order.

When I fire up the smoker tomorrow, I will pack a half a can of Copenhagen long cut and proceed to do away with the better part of a bottle of Eagle Rare (10 year).

Sometime in the evening, I'll likely move over to what little I have left of Widow Jane Decadence.

Always neat.

My father-in-law tends to show up with a Weller's Antique around the holidays. We always enjoy it and a good long night of 42, which he and my mother-in-law were kind enough to learn to play when I married their little heiress.

I am entirely grateful for all of these things.

Merry Christmas.

LOL. That is a small subset of my entire bar. And not a single bottle in the entire bar is close to empty.

I'm only new to tasting bourbon, but not new to drinking liquor. These days, I rarely drink more than three ounces on a given day, and the majority of weeks I drink two ounces are less.

The whole purpose of having all those assorted bottles is to prove just how great they are. I, myself, am partaking of a rare and excellent bottle of Tito's. Yes, its vodka. I actually prefer a good bottle isle of jura or McClellan. Very good friend brought me a bottle of walker blue label, and let me tell you, hes on my Christmas list. If you really want to impress me, bring me a bottle of Trinidad rum. Ohhhhhh. I have the shivers

It holds just fine for a while but the more air it is in contact with, it does deteriorate though I don’t think it ever goes “bad” just different.

The short of it is the following.

"A bourbon’s shelf life is six months to two years if you have an opened bottle of this liquor stored properly. Opening the bottle introduces fresh air to the bourbon whiskey, leading it to go bad and lose its unique flavor profile [1].

It does not happen right away. You can still store the open bottles for the next two months and not worry about the taste or smell changing. But after a year, the bourbon whiskey will start losing its primary characteristics. "

That being said, I have a bottle of Chattanooga bottled-in-bond opened in September 2022. I did not like the taste when first opened. I poured some this week. I like the taste better now. I would not call it flat, but I do think the flavor is different, and its potency now is what some might describe as "smoother".

"Flat" refers to the carbonation in beer, which liquor doesnt have. Wine starts to oxidize after its opened, which can be very good for a highly tannic, red wine, but hurts it after a couple days. Wines age over time, if they are of good quality. Liquor does not. Liquor doesn't age once its been bottled and doesnt change much after its opened. Thats not to say the flavor doesnt change if youve held it for a long while, evaporation being a factor. You can hold a bottle of.liquor for years and have it be "reasonably close" to its original flavor, unlike beer or wine.

The question is... If you have the bottle, and youve opened it, why even give it a chance to sour???? Drink that biatch. Its there to enjoy

Just tried Basil Hayden "Toast" which I quite liked. Have been re-watching "Deadwood" and BH is what they were drinking in 1877 !
