Baseball....

UCF looks to be a legit post season team. With that said should have never been swept at home. I like what Clemson did though. Much like UCF, Clemson hit the ball hard and put the ball in play which is what you want. You want the other team to have to make plays and unfortunately for Clemson UCF's defense is legit as well. Clemson cleans the errors up and this series is a toss up. Not saying Clemson would have won but definitely wouldn't have gotten swept. I liked the response in the post game presser though. I like this coaching staff and really like a couple of these freshmen. I really believe this offense can be explosive but have to clean the defense up. Can not allow teams to have easy runs throwing and kicking the ball around. Really need Grice to be that guy he was his freshman year. His regression under Monte was alarming. Not going to blame it all on Monte bc there were guys that lit it up as well under his tutelage, I just thought the pressure of being a coach at a big time program got to him toward the end.

We hit the ball well and took a good approach at the plate. We hit quite a few "bad luck' balls that were tagged right at a fielder.

All that said, our pitching staff looks to be severely lacking. With the way the bats and baseballs have changed, 6-7 runs should be enough to win most games. Unfortunately, you fix subpar pitching through solid recruiting, not in-season coaching.

You nailed it. Pitching is what sunk Clemson in those two games. Won't name names but many of the relievers Monty had as starters or at least put them in as starters and they clearly are 1 inning pitchers at best. Hitting is solid but can't do much when you consistently give up four and five run innings. That said I think the staff is certainly good, but the pitching talent brought in under Monty is not tournament caliber. We know what we have at this point lets just see if the pitching improves by year end. The team is good enough to make it to the tournament this year but don't see them hosting or going past a regional. However even that would be improvement. A lot of baseball left.

Take all the past dislike for Monte Lee out and look at what our team looks like. Is the lineup stronger than last year? How long will it take to come together under a new coach? A baseball season is long and hard and I don't think you learn a lot against the first real team you play. Big series coming up and we need to continue our recent success against the yard birds.

When Grice came out of HS he was a two way kid that most people thought had a better future on the bump than at the plate "pro wise". He was new to the ACC and got a lot of FB he could handle, now they have two years scouting report and they have found how to pitch him and find those gaps in the swing. It's hard to beat Cooper who is compact and takes pitches and Grice is big, longer swing and aggressive early in count.

I still believe we don't have legit 2-3 RHH in the line up that negates the LHP's. The late inning match ups against the bull lens are key and we just don't have those scary power RHH that can do damage with the LHP out of the pens.

Let's see how EB recruits but we aren't big and physical like true SEC top end ACC schools. We don't scare you off the bus and that is an area we need to get better in the coming years.

Note: I think our arms are good, I just think we need to find the rotation. Ammons isn't a Friday guy, max effort kid that would be a great Sunday guy for a staff. Barlow and Smith are potential Sat guys this year and Smith a Friday guy next year, but every team that is really good, they don't have these questions, maybe around Sunday but Friday and Sat are no brainers unless you are Arkansas and have tons of arms.
