I have some questions about eye injections for diabetics? For some reason, my personal eye doctor seems unwilling or not able to answer my questions.

I have read everything on the internet. I have specific questions or would like to hear from someone who has or is a current patient that is doing these.

I have been given 6 months of vision left in my right eye and 24 months of vision left in my left eye. My doctor is pushing me to start these injections weekly that are around $800 each shot and my insurance says they will not cover them. My doctor says they will not fix or correct my vision. So, I am at odds as to why I should even do them. My doctor will not offer alternatives and or even explain the procedure in detail to me. I am so lost. I have tried to get other opinions but to no avail.

So reach out to these doctors linked there…

Dec 15, 2022, 8:23 AM

…give them a direct call. They may very well set up a TeleMedicine appointment over the Internet.

You would be able to repeat this for multiple physicians until you find someone to talk to. I would put good odds that if one of these doctors could not give you the advice you need, they would be able to refer you to someone else that could help.

I'm not an ophthalmologist, but I'm currently reading a book called Lifespan by a Harvard professor called David Sinclair, and there's some interesting stuff there about vision restoration. If you're looking for off-the-beaten-path alternatives to explore, there are some supplements and lifestyle interventions he mentions that may be of interest. I'm new to posting on TigerNet but I gather there's something called TMail? Happy to discuss more.

I've got an idea. Plan on going to the Orange Bowl and prior to going see if you can get an appointment at the UMiami - Bascom Palmer Eye Institute...... best in the US. My grandson was there this summer and received treatment on both eyes for a condition that could have eventually led to blindness. They used gene therapy that not only corrected the condition but reversed the effects of the disease. To put it in perspective, there were no doctors in Atlanta, even at Emory University, that could do this procedure , however, thanks to them, they were able to get him to Miami.

If you tmail me I can give more details.

Re: Are there any Ophthalmologist's on the board?

Dec 15, 2022, 9:28 AM

I personally think those injections are a scam. They don't restore vision, but "keep you from losing it at such a fast pace".

My mother got those every month for five years. I would drive from Greenville to Salem, pick her up and drive her to Clemson, then wait for an hour while she got her shot...then drive her back to Salem and myself back to Greenville. She never reported one bit of improvement throughout the entire process. Oh...the same Dr had her taking PresserVision like it was candy.

I'll throw in Ms. The Mole's mother who is currently doing the same treatment, and my aunt who got the shots for three years before she died. Neither shows/showed any gain...but were convinced/scared by a very upscale, high-profile "group" that they would have gone blind without the shots.

(each had good insurance, btw)

Re: Are there any Ophthalmologist's on the board?

Dec 15, 2022, 9:38 AM

This sounds exactly like what they are telling me. I am using Clemson eye. My doctor will not even explain the process or explain what alternatives are out there. He told me I either do the shots or he is releasing me, and I will lose my eyesight. I have gone to Clemson eye for many years and have had a good relationship with them until now. They did laser surgery a few months ago (not lasik) and this made my vision worse. All I want is a prescription so I can get glasses and he refuses to give me a prescription for glasses unless I do the shots.

One of my best friends takes the shots once a month in each eye. His shots, however, are I hink for Glaucoma or macular degeneration and he is not diabetic. In his case, I feel sure that the shots have enabled him to keep his eyesight.

Thank you. I am very nervous and scared but I watched my dad go through these shots and he lost his eye site after one of the shots caused a serious hemorrhage in his eye. That is one reason for my reluctance. I just wish he would take the time to talk to me. He literally talked to me for 30 seconds yesterday and refused to explain the procedure, the benefits, the side effects or anything to me.

Re: Are there any Ophthalmologist's on the board?

Dec 15, 2022, 10:06 AM [ in reply to Re: Are there any Ophthalmologist's on the board? ]

There are several places where you can get a walk-in eye exam if you need glasses.

Your plight reminds me of a similar event: I've made no secret that I went through some very hard times back in the 1990's. Without telling a long story, I will share that I was sweeping leaves from the upstairs deck of a rental house in Seneca. It has benches built all around the sides. I stepped up on the bench to reach a limb that had broken. The boards had dry-rotted and my foot went through. I fell backwards with my foot stuck in the hole above me. I fully expected to see my leg snap. But, it didn't. I was home alone and it took me 10 minutes to figure out how to free myself without causing additional pain. I was able to pull an old grill close enough to pull the majority of my weight upwards enough to relieve the tension.

I had no insurance and no money. Going to a hospital wasn't an option (then). In three days, my foot was black, blue, purple, and green. Ms. The Mole pitched a fit that I should go to a local sports injury group. She rounded up $75 from relatives and took me. They took an X-ray ($65) and put me in a room. A specialist came in with a folder containing my rehabilitation plan. "Nothing is broken" he said. "But your tendons are torn to pieces". He started explaining that I would have to come in three times each week for treatment and PT for at least 6 weeks, at which time I would be re-evaluated. He then asked who was my insurance company? I told him I had no insurance and no money. He quickly closed my "plan" and said "Soak it in warm water" as he walked out the door and never looked back. I noticed my "plan" was in the trash can as I limped down the hallway.

I did soak it. It did heal. It was painful. But I show no ill effects today. My point is: If soaking the foot was an option, why wasn't that the FIRST option.

People tend to dismiss the fact that the bottom line is profit. It is true that all need profit to stay in business, but I think medical care is criminally expensive.

I'm not familiar with the shots for diabetics, but I have taken my parents to Retina Consultants in Greenville for injections for macular degeneration. As with your case, the goal is to maintain the level of vision. My grandmother did not have that option 30 years ago and in comparison it has been worthwhile for my parents. I would recommend Dr. Daniel Apple and am glad that he is young and should still be practicing in 20 years when I will probably need to see him. The front office staff made us aware of a program called Good Days (mygooddays.org) that covers part of the cost. Please research both Dr. Apple and the assistance program before you talk yourself out of getting treatment.

Dec 15, 2022, 2:48 PM

Well folks, I got some answers this afternoon. The clinical manager called me today to try and fix my eye doctor's mistake. She is scheduling me for another appointment with a new doctor through Clemson eye for a second opinion. She was very apologetic. Come to find out my current eye doctor put in his notice at Clemson eye and is no longer going to be working for them, hence the reason he was so dismissive of me and wanting to end his relationship with me as a patient.

Clemson eye is trying to make things right and, although still nervous, they are having a new retina specialist look over my case.

Re: Are there any Ophthalmologist's on the board?

Dec 15, 2022, 5:40 PM

I have been taking injections for about 8 years now . I have diabetic retinopathy and had lots of bleeding into my eyes. The injections were $1200.00 when the shots first came out. I did not see your diagnosis if it diabetic retinopathy these injections will help. I was stubborn and had a doctor tell me to give him $1200.00 or go home and go blind. I went home and started going blind. My wife found a different Retina doctor and they got me a credit card from the manufacturer and the shots were covered by insurance then After my eyes stabilized I was switched to a less expensive shot. The shots will help stop small blood vessels in the eye from bursting when they burst you will get a foggy mirror look to your vision when there is enough blood you can't see. The blood vessels can detach the Retina if left unchecked. I had one detach and was in total darkness until surgery. The shots are better than the laser treatments they help eliminate. Hope this helps. Get a good Retina doctor and protect the vision you have.

reaching out for help and/or guidance. One thing I have learned is that you have to be your own biggest advocate. You can easily get slingshot from one specialist to another... 15 mins here, 15 mins there, etc. And nobody is taking the time to listen carefully to you. They're overbooked and already late for the next appt...

I won't go into details, but I've been dealing with some serious health issues for about 3 years now. And I've had to get pretty aggressive and downright rude with a couple of doctors. Because they'll blow you off sometimes, if you let them. But I won't let them. And you shouldn't either. They're not God... they're just doing a job like everybody else.

I wish you well and hope you find some answers.

My sister has glaucoma and for years was seeing an “eye specialists” at Storm Eye at MUSC charleston. The doctor totally fumbled her eye care and she lost vision in one eye. She did research and found Mayo in Jacksonville and the guy there took her in and saved her other eye. She does like him a lot. I would strongly consider looking in to going to a world class guy who specializes in your specific problem. I don’t know your current doctor but I question if he is world class, cutting edge, that is what you need. I’m waiting on my sister to respond back to my text with her doctors name in Jacksonville.
