Alternatives to PKs to decide tie-breakers in soccer?

I would think that we all dislike PKs being used to decide tie-breakers, but at the same time, there obviously haven't been many good alternatives come up.

I have one:
Set pieces/Corner kicks. It would be similar to the way college football does overtimes. You have a cornerkick that is in play until the defense stops a shot, the ball goes out of bounds, or the defense clears it past midfield, at which time possession goes to the other team and they get a shot. I think this would be more exciting and would definitely involve the whole team, rather than just two players at any given time.

A friend suggested another:
Continue with OT like we've been doing, but shorter time periods, and after each time period, remove a player. I like the creativity of this, but with a field as big as you have in soccer, I don't see it as practical. But it's an option.

Any other thoughts on either of these ideas or something you've come up with or have? Not like any of them will be adopted, but it's still fun to kick around (pun intended).

to play a five minute OT period. If the outcome has not been decided, a second five minute OT period is played.

If the outcome is still undetermined, the teams go to PK's.

These WC games have been 2 ten minute OT’s.

End up playing 110 minutes.

in the World Cup, it is two 15 minute overtime periods resulting in 120 total minutes of game time.

Thanks for the correction. I just watched 2 OT games and thought they played 10. Guess I was not paying much attention. Thanks

PK’s is hard way to lose but it’s exciting to watch. Thinking about those WC games Sat and some of the misses. Kane missed one high and he is considered to be an elite player or at least upper tier. That goal looks kind of small when the pressure is on, but the pressure on the goalie has to be on another level. They either have to miss or the goalie has to guess.

for things like a World Cup championship, NCAA championship, etc - I don't like it. I was a goalkeeper back in the day, and there is some mind-game-play at work there, but largely, I had to guess where he would kick it and try to make the stop. For the goalie to make a good save - speaking as one - it's pretty much just luck. For the guy taking the shot, there's some accuracy involved, obviously, but there has to be a better way to decide a game - especially a championship.

and because of that, the players taking the PK's have come-up with some really creative ways to fake-out the Keepers.

5 seconds for the player 35 yards out to go one on one with the goalkeeper. The player has so many different options on how to attack the goalie, and the goalie has options. Total mind games. They use to be so great!!

It is still the best out of 5, then if it is tied you do one at a time.

need to make it easier to score in soccer so that there is no need for PK's. Why do you want ties? Tell me one good reason.

My solution, since the goalies are so much taller and rangier than when the game was invented:

Expand the goal size by one meter, divided by 3, on each side. Add 66 cm to the width going across (33 cm each side) and make the goal 33 cm taller. That will sufficiently offset the increased coverage of goalies, and lead to more scoring and less ties. Simple as that, nothing else. THis is a modern game I believe refined into present form and dimensions by the Brits in the 19th century when heights were not nearly what they are now. I just bet if it's researched there was more scoring back then, someone look it up.

Now all other things, such as speed and quickness and athleticism of players all equal and cancel out, so they don't matter - sort of like baseball.

So increase the goal size only.

It is a tough nut to crack. Every solution I have heard is just a contrived way to end the game. Some are closer to real soccer, like the remove a player one below.

I can tell you from experience that continuing with more overtimes is not a great answer. My high school team lost in a state playoff game in 21 overtimes (probably a never-to-be-broken record). That said, I still prefer that to PKs. At least it is solved with actual soccer. For youth or compressed tournaments that is a non-starter, but I personally prefer it being decided as the game is played.

If that is a non-starter, I like the old NASL shootout where the players get the ball at midfield and have a certain amount of time to score against only keeper. More skill is involved and it is closer to a game situation, but still not great.
