You do not have to block forever to throw it long.

Sep 5, 2023, 9:21 PM

Sometimes I enjoy watching Youtube videos of highlights of the all time greats in football. I could watch Barry Sanders, Gayle Sayers and the greats for hours at a time. The other day I was watching the highlights of the career of Jerry Rice and after seeing about 30 long touchdown passes from Joe Montana, I began to notice a common theme on virtually every play. Every long bomb was released by the QB in 2 seconds or under. Over & over, I could count "One thousand one, one thousand two" and the ball was gone. Every play, whether a deep slant, a post, a flag, or a go route........every pass was released in 2 seconds or under.

So the excuse we are hearing that the offensive line cannot block long enough to throw deep is a bogus claim. 2 seconds is all the QB needs to launch a deep ball. Watch the Joe Montana video or the Jerry Rice highlights and see for yourself.

Not many QB/WR combinations consist of the Joe Montana and Jerry Rice skill set. “Because they could do it” doesn’t mean everyone can. Youre comparing NFL hall of famers to college kids. I’d say 3 seconds is typical.

Then substitute Joe Blow and Jerry Klesewski........doesn't matter. A Play is a play and can be run the same way by anyone with similar abilities. The point is, timing and pattern running are more important than a five second drop and a rocket arm.

You know more than others because you saw it on YouTube?

I’m expecting this to be on message board geniuses by tomorrow.
I also loved this quote, “ A Play is a play and can be run the same way by anyone with similar abilities.”. How many people in the history of football do suppose had “similar abilities” to Joe Montana and Jerry Rice?

How many secs. was the ball in the air after release? If 3 secs, then the receiver would have to be almost world record speed to run 40 yards in 5 secs.

Actually Jerry Rice ran the 40 yards in 4.4 seconds.

Jerry Rice was a great WR, not only on speed but how he could cut and move while running. WR's don't normally run a straight line. They are blocked, cut, etc. Not many college players can do that, if any. But 3 secs. with a fairly fast receiver would get the job done. But you would need to stay in the pocket to get it done.

The receivers can't beat anyone down field. And if they do,

Sep 5, 2023, 9:48 PM

they are not likely to catch it.

The problem is you do need someone who can get down field to catch it...

Our Wr can’t get open down field long enough for that

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Joe ain't our QB and Jerry ain't our wide receiver.

You probably picked out the QB and WR who were as good as any and better than 99% of the all time greats as a pair.

I'm guessing an NFL HOF QB and absolute

Sep 6, 2023, 8:21 AM

legend like Joe Montana was a little better at reading a defense than Cade or DJ. He probably knew where he wanted to throw the ball at the snap.

Also I'd love a Jerry Rice on this team right now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He has had time to throw it long. Our receivers do not

Sep 6, 2023, 8:22 AM

get open for him to throw it long....
