Can we do away with Conference Championships now?

Dec 4, 2022, 7:46 PM

Since we know they're totally worthless why should we bother with playing them and risking injuries?

Conference Championships are even less meaningful than Bowl games.

I disagree.

For one. Winning your conference is one of the goals of every team.

2. Moving forward with an expanded playoff, if you aren't a conference champion I can see a situation where you do not get in. We will have to get to that point though.

Not having conference champions is almost like saying; "if you aren't the National Champion you wasted your season"! Which, is not the case.

Dabo and Clemson got built on a "slow burn"! Started with winning the ACC and went on from there.

Gives you something to build on and helps with recruiting a region of the country.

Less we just have the winner of the NC only with any type of hardware of any kind to say, "come to my school"!

Conference championship will be meaningless once the playoffs expand. They are expanding.

Quite the opposite. Conference champs will likely get auto bids. Even if that’s not in play, it brings much more credence to a team’s resume.

It might give Byes and/or home field advantage.***

I get your point but it means a lot to that 12 year old kid that has dreams of playing there one day... just ask Will Shipley. Think what a big Deal it was for nate to get on the acc desk and be interviewed...

In the new 12 team playoffs you can only get seeded 1 through 4 and get a bye week by being a conference champion. So for a team like ND they have to play an extra game to win the championship.

Siriusly??? How long do you think that will last before...."eye test". Get real!

Well, winning it is one of Dabo’s yearly goals so he obviously thinks it’s important.

Dec 4, 2022, 7:57 PM

Why would you go against a coach who has had all the success he has?

Pretty sure that was when he still thought it really mattered... this season should put a hard stop to such ridiculous assumptions!

Maybe in the expanded playoffs, the Conference Champs get a bye week, and those others guy have to play their way in. Otherwise, the cc games are just a risk, no reward.

It knocked USC out. I think Ohio State fans would disagree.

You don’t need to have a conference championship game to have a team declared a conference champion

I'm assuming you mean things like; who is ranked higher or other tie breakers. That to me; wouldn't be good enough. Especially when it could mean a 1st round bye.

Prove it on the field and not some other means!

IT will always mean something to be the conference champion. Also remember, as Clemson fans(if all of you are indeed) you wouldn't want who makes the playoffs to be just about perception and eye test. It had better have some set in stone(if you will) terms to it. If not, you will have a Big 10 and SEC party yearly.

A conference champion isn't getting left out. Especially one that proved it on the field. Injuries are a part of the game. Has been since the start of football. Next man up. Develop your depth because of the fact injuries are a part of the game. Simple.
