I wish that Clemson still had the 'rat' tradition. Some of you youngsters would have benefitted from that semester!

I still have my Rat Hat, and I'm 66 yo.
As for Rat Season, CLEMSON should never, ever have eliminated that. Of course CLEMSON would have to order new football helmets since the heads would be half the size they are now. Works for me though.

The biggest deal was to steal a Rat Cap from a Furman student. Woe to the rat who was caught not wearing his cap!!

You would probably not make it very far if you had tried to steal mine. One of us would have had a very bad day. I worked too hard for that.

I, too, still have my rat hat, and I am 72.
Was a real downer having to pay an upperclassman 50 cents to cut off all my hair, one aspect of the freshman "initiation" that existed in 1962. I had graduated from high school in New York State (father was military and assigned up there), and came down to Clemson with a VERY full head of hair. Believe me, was pretty traumatic to lose it all of a sudden all of it. Still have a photo of me taken right after the haircut.
Another aspect of the freshman "tradition", that went on until the Carolina game, were the quite frequent call outs in the dining hall of "up rats", and the subsequent required C-L-E-M-S-O-N T-I-G-E-R-S chants by the rat pack. I recall once having to cheer 18 times during a single meal.
Found out during this initiation that my hair grew 1/2" a month. Took over two and a months until I was able to part the hair that had grown out, and start to look normal again.
Good memories.
