Why leave the ACC?

5

Jul 29, 2023, 3:11 PM

Other than cash, why leave the ACC? Let’s be devils advocate and speculate a bit.

With 12 team playoff odds of going to playoff are better if we stay in ACC,especially if FSWho leaves. Maybe we just play rope a dope and let FSwho leave then just decide to stay, LOL🤪 Sort of like we did with SC back in 1971. How’s that working out for them 50 years later? Not too good.

There’s going to be a big revolution in big time college sports within 5-7 years. Either back to student athletes or it’s a minor league farm system for NFL with paid employees. I dread that day. Our coach has previously said he won’t stay under that type of system.

As a university we might have less money but more options if we can hold out for a few more years and ready to make tough decisions considering not just immediate cash. Look at the massive changes in TV coverage and the game in the last 50 years. We ain’t seen nothing yet!!

>other than cash
You don't need any other reason.
But the discussion is philosophical, we're stuck for another 13 years

No we are not stuck for 13 years… maybe 2***

Get every ACC on parity $$ wise so the ACC can compete long

Jul 29, 2023, 3:26 PM

Term and it is a whole different discussion. But starving the ACC teams of $30+ million a year and after 4 years the disparity in who we can hire as coaches and the facility investments we can no longer make to stay competitive becomes a slow death. And crappy football doesn’t draw viewers and $$ and it is a death spiral.

Just think how much more booster $$ could go towards NIL if they didn’t have to give so much to IPTAY because the media rights payout is so much bigger per year. All of that is why we have to get into a situation where we are within reason $ wise with the big boy programs. Otherwise quit trying to be a national football power and go the way of the Ivy League and FCS teams. That is an option too I suppose.

So, the ACC should be buying lottery tickets...everyday.

The real thing we need to look at is how fast Disney is goin

2

Jul 29, 2023, 3:50 PM

Disney is going broke & they own ESPN, the promised payouts to the SEC & ACC are void when they can no longer afford to pay the contracts.

I believe this is the future we need to look at very closely. The financial stability of ESPN isn’t looking great unless they are sold to a bigger more financially solid company.

The whole house of cards could fall quickly, along with the value of the dollar. The Contract won’t make it to 2036 in my opinion.

Cable TV & advertising via cable is dying quickly too, and that’s their cash cow.

Will the four letter network go the way of golf, Liv takes over college football?

Let's not think the money will continually grow

It will hit a max, if it hasn't already, of value for tv networks. Not to mention cable tv networks are on the way out.

Now, maybe a Netflix or equivalent company will try to take over, or ESPN becomes an online-only entity, but changes will come and the value proposition will change. Heck, the conferences may not need a separate tv entity at all pretty soon. Just create an online platform for fans and sell ads and subscriptions directly, bypassing the ESPN middle man.

All that being said, its the schools with the biggest fan bases that will reap the rewards, and the ACC doesn't have enough fans to gain the same number of eyeballs as the B1G and SEC.

The stock price has fallen in the last couple of years, but they are making money post 2020.

Yes Disney losing hundreds of millions is why our admin is looking to the B1G instead of the ACC. B1G media rights model is much better positioned for sustainability and even growth. Disney might even retreat and sell off ESPN.

The four letter sports/political network isn't going to sink.

They may be bought and re-invented to a degree, but they will remain. The money isn't going to trend down in college athletics either. The cash register is legally open now.

The problem is it's now effectively openly legal to buy players now in professional college football.

As long as the Tigers stay a “front page” team I don’t care which conference it’s in!…..

Money always enters the picture so remember, as an avid Tiger fan, you can do your part!

Re: Why leave the ACC?

Jul 29, 2023, 5:53 PM

One of the problems with that is we will lose recruits playing in a weak conference. For example mike matthews

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is a different game with pay for play, which is coming

Jul 29, 2023, 7:22 PM

WE will not have enough money to make it work and compete with the SEC and Big10. We will be like a mid-major getting an invite to the playoff, but not really on the same level as teams from the big 2.
